Do you have to make any clearance to get the engine out the top? I always thought the water pump had to come off and the rad yanked out before it would clear.
I should get me one of those.
BTW I don't know if anyone else saw but in another thread the dude fastened the engine hoist to the strut brace and lifted the whole front of the car up over the engine & suspension. Not exactly sure if I'd try that myself but it sure seemed clever.
EDIT: Uh, ya nevermind that last part lol.

Re: getting engine out
You have to remove, pretty much everything from the front of the engine to get her out. The intake manifold needs to come off to get it out from the top, the water pump, ofcourse the radiator and condensor and tranny cooler, all the accessorys,. It would be much easier to remove it from the bottom, if there was a safer manner in which to do it without a lift, I would have definetly attempted it that way. Also I saw a article on the web about how to remove from the bottom and yeah, the guy used a strut tower brace to lift it off the engine and tranny, then roller them out on like a flat wooden dolly he made and when finished lowwered the car back on them. It looked pretty easy.

Re: getting engine out
yeah we saw that..... i bet that was something too see, i wouldnt try an remove our engines without a lift because i have enough fun doing it with one. im good at engine work and all but i snap out real fast when shit starts going down hill. thats why i only made it as a jetengine mechanic for 2 yrs when i first went inot the airforce...it drove me nuts. being a on a search and rescue team and being a cop was much better for my nervs lol

Re: getting engine out
I didn't have to. I just did. I needed the cam out before I pulled the motor, someone was buying it.
So I tore down to make life easier when we pulled it out.
The whole process really wasn't that bad. Took some time, and we forgot to remove the brake lines (which broke) but not a problem. Just get new ones for the install of the new motor.
And as far as I am concerned....this is STILL just a bolt-on car. Motor bolts on.
It will look stock under the hood minus fuel rails, lid, and headers. The color of the block will be a touch different, but most people won't know the difference.

very sleeperish... and very evil i might add... especially for poor guys like me who would be minutes away from having our ass handed to us...
when people who don't know very much look under my hood i just tell them i have a 305tpi or something... they wouldn't know either way... but anyone who knows anything about chevy small blocks will know that my engine is not a tpi...

Re: getting engine out
I tell people all the time after I race them its a stock 3.8. I doubt they believe me cause of the way she sounds but without the badges, that I removed you have no way of knowing its a formula (from the outside anyway).
