Progress: Jaguar XJR-14

After a few weeks break here is my latest project. It's a 1/24th scale Le Mans Miniatures Jaguar XJR-14. The curbside, late season version, LMM also make a full detail kit. As you can see in the second picture it is a very simple kit, not a lot of parts. But being resin quite a lot of prep work is required. My old web site is dead, so I'm now using photobucket.

Looks good so far. Are those fans at the base of the windshield? Do you have any pictures of the markings that will be on it?

I'm guessing Silk Cut? Excellent project. Any particular event you're trying to replicate?

Yup, Silk Cut Purple (or pink!), something like the below picture:

Not really going to do a particular race, but will be number 4 driven by Teo Fabi (champion for Jaguar in 1991) and David Brabham (cause he's an Aussie). Yes those are fans on the dash. I suspect they're a Ross Brawn quick fix to demist the widscreen.

Finally laid some colour down. Had a hell of a time due to a new frustration - contaminated paint!

The paint was mixed by my local automotive paint store in cheapish Hi-Chem/Motorspray basecoat. When I went to spray it I was getting all these white flecks. At first I thought the airbrush might be dirty, but after cleaning it thoroughly three times there was no change. Just as I was starting to get really annoyed, by chance I noticed the bottom of the jar I'd stored the paint in had white particles on the bottom too! Having found the culprit, I thinned a big batch of the paint down and strained it through a tissue to remove the contaminants. Very messy but did the trick and spraying went fine after that. The finish is matt at the moment, will need a sealing layer of clear before decaling, then more clear after they've dried out.

Don't you just love working with those quick-drying automotive paints?

It's looking awesome already, lvoely colour. Did you eyeball the Silk Cut purple or did you have some specific colour mixed for you?

Yes those automotive paint are fantastic to work with. I had the shop eye match the colour to a sample in the kit. It is one of those funny colours that look different depending on the light, may even change when it is clear coated.

Nice progress.. I've just started to use automotive paints, and I too noticed they dry darn fast.. But I don't have a proper airbrush set up - no compressor so used a rattle can instead..

Odd colour, but it will look stunning when decals and clear are applied. I'll keep an eye on the progress..

Finally some progress to report. The decals are done and the clear coating has begun. Wasn't too happy with the LMM decals this time, the purple "swishes" are a bit blotchy and scratched. Looks okay, but doesn't stand up to close scrutiny. I thought about repainting them but didn't need the aggrovation off all that masking.

Looks great. did you put the decals on before clearcoating?

Because the base coat was flat I cleared before decaling, then again after. Will still need another coat or two to smooth the decal ridges out. Some decals actually go over other decals so I cleared and sanded between them too. I wonder why it takes me so long to build models...?
