Re: 96 blazer headlights

You have a few options, one, is to get a true Xenon gas filled halogen bulb. These have clear glass, and whatever you do, stay away from blue coated bulbs. You can get Osram Silverstars, which are different from the ones sold here in the States, check on ebay. Another good option is to run HIR Bulbs, which you can also find on ebay, which utilizes an infrared coating to reflect heat back onto the filament, letting it burn brighter. If you are running the 9005/9006 set up, buy a high powered 9005 set of bulbs and a wiring harness, and convert your 9006 to 9005. Buying a seperate wiring harness with a relay will allow the lights to draw power directly from the battery, thereby reducing the stress on your OEM wiring.

That is bad advice. It is illegal and dangerous because the 9005 will blind oncoming drivers. It's one thing to have brighter lights, but having lights that cause a hazard to all other drivers is completely asinine.

And I don't want to screw with the harness. Just change to better bulbs. Is the 9005 the low beam and the 9006 the high?

9005 = high beam
9006 = low beam

Thanks blazee. So since it's only my low beams that suck I should be able to get by with buying a couple of good quality 9006's.

You're welcome. Yes, if you're happy with your high beams, you can just replace your low beams. (after upgrading the low beams, you probably won't be happy with the high beams anymore) SComp23 and rlith posted some good advice about which kinds of bulbs to get. The only part of the advice that I took issue with, was SComp23's suggestion of putting high beam bulbs in the low beam sockets.

Re: 96 blazer headlights

That is actually untrue about it blinding oncoming drivers, especially through a fluted lens. The only difference is some 9006 have a glare cap on the end of it. If you don't believe me, stick a 9005 bulb in the low beam and pull up to a wall, and back your vehicle up 25 feet, you will notice no difference except a slight increase in intensity

Re: 96 blazer headlights

That little glare cap keeps the oncoming drivers from being exposed to the most intense part of the bulb.

Forget the wall, that's your perspective, put yourself in the other drivers' shoes. Turn on a set of 9006 bulbs and walk in front and look at them, if you focus on the center you will see a dark spot, that is the glare cap doing it's job and blocking the hot spot from blinding you.

Now try to do the same thing, with a set of 9005 bulbs, you won't be able to focus at the center, because they will hurt your eyes.

Re: 96 blazer headlights

If it was behind clear glass, not fluted glass, you would be correct. Believe me, I am all about being kind to oncoming drivers, every post that has been put up here about an HID kit I have explained why they are horrible ideas. The fluted glass will protect on coming drivers

Can someone clue me in on how to get at the headlight sockets? Do you have to remove the airbox (left) and battery (right)? Or is there a trick to removing them?

Re: 96 blazer headlights

What year is it? If it is a 98+ I know there are 4 plastic clips you pull up and the headlight comes right out.

Remove the airbox and battery, then remove the outer most 10mm bolts on each lamp..
