NEED TO TURN "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT OFF!!!
I'm sure the answer to my question is somewhere in this forum, but I will ask it anyway:
I've had my 96 grand prix for 4 years, and the service engine soon light has been on for the majority of that; actualy, it was on before I got it too. To make a long story short, I need to turn this light off, and can not figure out how. Is there an ECU fuse I could pull? Could I disconect the battery for a while? Any info would be great. |

well as of 95 i believe the gov has made it mandatory that there be a obd port to diagnosis problems that would turn the check engine light on. so you should be able to have it scanned and have the error code pulled to help determine the problem and resolve a solution.

Thanks s jo4
I've had it checked many times before, and I am tired of paying to have it done. Is there any way I can clear it myself? |

you shouldn't have to pay to have it scanned, autozones and o'riley's scan it for free, but next time you have it scanned write down the code it and post it back up with us and also ask them to clear the code(make sure you ask to clear it while outside as it's policy they "can't" do that for you) and if the light comes back on then you know you have a problem that needs to be fix to keep the check engine from coming back on.

Thanks, I'll give autozone a try.
Just out of curiosity though and for future reference, is there any way to clear it myself? |

buy a scanner or unplugged your battery for about 15-30 minutes, should reset the pcm and clear most intermittent codes, but of course the check engine light will turn on when the error is found again. or you can have your pcm reprogrammed with that delete code in it which i find a little extreme and not worth the cost unless you have a modified engine.

last check engine light i had came on just as my vehicle prepared to throw a rod. doesn't sound like yours is in that condition, but still, i'd want to know the cause. autozone should be able to reset the light but it will just come back on if the cause isn't eliminated.

try disconnecting the sensor on your air box. just pull off the clip, turn on the car, shut the car off, then put the clip back on, then turn the car on. if that doesn't work than i dont know what to tell you.

ses lights do not come on for no reason, pull the code, fix the bad component, then get the code cleared

Re: NEED TO TURN "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" LIGHT OFF!!!
I'm fairly familiar with the GM Pontiac Grand Prix, as I own a 02 Grand Prix. I also have a friend that had to constantly reset "check engine" light after many oil changes at a car dealership. If your car doesn't have any problems/reasons that the "check engine" light should be on...... "With your car off, Turn your igniton switch to the "on" position (don't start the car), then tap on the gas pedal 3 times, and you will see the lights on the dash flash 3 times. Now, it should be reset. Let me know if it works
