Checking your ECU codes and clearing them 101

Welp folks ecu codes are just about one of the most ignored things i have ever seen yet one of the most important at the same time. face it, that little light doesnt just come on cause it thinks its close to christmas, it means you got a problem.

if your truely concerned with your investment thats probably thousands of dollars aka your car then seeing whats wrong with it can only aid in your decision's to take care of the thing.

the below two pages though very large are scanned images of the actual helms service manual on how to obtain your codes and then clear them. it will also show you that nowhere in these pages does it say you have to let your car run for 5 minutes without touching the gas or any of the other grapevine stories that circulate around here about resetting the ecu. in all honesty resetting the ecu is worthless unless its to clear a code. resetting it after the addotion of a mod is not necessary because it learns it anyways. contrary to popular bellief it does not have one set of values that it goes by all the time. sure it has base maps but the world is not a constant place, nor the factors that effect a cars operation. as you drive your car will experience combinations in air temps and pressures and gasoline grades that are always different, and thats exactly why its a learning computer, so it can adapt, function correctly in that situation as opposed to another and overcome. sure its not some neaural net computer capable of controling a cybernetic organism like our favorite meathead the terminator but its pretty dynamic in its abilities to compensate. an example.....

a cold air intake does not require you to reset the ecu. if your in florida and your factory intake is sucking in ungodly hot air and you drive to maine and its sucking in ungodly cold air (40degrees) do you have to reset your ecu? nope cause the ecu adapts and adjusts to the conditions. welp its the same as your factory intake is sucking in hot air here in florida and you put a cold air intake on and stay here and now its sucking in air as cold as in maine (40 degrees). welp cold air is cold air and 40 degrees is 40 degrees no matter how how you put it so why would you have to reset anything? simple you dont.

now on to the pictures, everyone like pictures.
for reference you do not need an obd scan tool although they are a nice little thing to have.

things needed
1. a brain
2. eyeballs that work
3. a paperclip or piece of copper wire

also for reference the word MIL stands for malfunction indicator lamp also know in laymens terms to us underachievers as the "check engine light"

basically the only thing you will do different in this whole thing is instead of using the neato little honda connector to trigger the MIL to flash your code your gonna get ghetto and jump the circuit with a paperclip or piece of wire. sorry folks it has to be a cunductive material so a piece of string isnt gonna cut it.....

and after you get that code heres a list of what they are

this was helpful, but I need to get a better diagram of where the #*%( the thing I need to short is located. I can't find this bastard anywhere.. there's only one connection, and it looks like it's for the blower fan or whatever.

Hi!

You just saved me 45$!! (that's the price of an ECU reset by my Dealer)

I didn't find the service check connector though (didn't search for long, I confess). Anyway I knew it was a frozen MAP sensor problem, so I went to the reset procedure right away. At first, I found the MTR CHCK fuse and thought it could be the good one since my car is a 1997 and the system seem to be different. It didn't work. I then found the BACKUP/RADIO fuse and saved 45$!

Thank you very much.

there is a fuse called Hazard. Pull it out for 30 seconds to reset your ECU (1987-1991)

Best regards

Well... this is an issue solved long time ago. My civic is actually a 1997 and I think that the fuse is "called" memory (or something like that) on these models. Anyway, that's what I did and I saved 50$ each time I had the problem (once a year). Thanks for the info anyway! (The Internet may be useful sometimes...) :-)
