Re: 1996 Cherokee driving me nuts.
i emailed the orginator of the thread directly on this one. i do believe that this is a case of "vapor lock".
the fuel lines must be getting too warm and the gas vaporizes therefore causeing this problem.

Thanks for the reply but I do not see how it could be vapor locking when it only does this when it gets below a 1/2 tank,
Stop and put more gas in it and no problem.
I am in process of getting the regulator that no one has in stock through my dealer, ouch, and we shall see.

Re: 1996 Cherokee driving me nuts.
i must have missed the whole 1/2 tank thing......
is the regulator located in the fuel tank? haven't gotten that far with my jeep yet.
it is definitely a pick up problem if it happens when you are changing your incline angle. have you dropped the tank?

Yes it is on the fuel pump. Most are on the fuel rail, but not this one.
I do not have to drop tank to change pump and stuff on this one for it comes out the rear of tank.
Don't have to change incline, just get below 1/2 tank. Don't matter if your going up hill or down.
Again, thanks.
BTW, I have changed everything on this Jeep that ends in an S.

Try replacing the fuel pump. They're known to break down and short out when warmed up, then recover like nothing happened when cooled down. The amount of gas in your tank will act like a heat sink, cooling it down and allowing it to work after only a few minutes after stall if full, longer if not. An in-garage pressure test won't reveal this, and the short or open won't occur until it's overheated. Good Luck.

Well I kinda feel stupid.
After doing it for 2 times, I let the Jeep run down to pretty close to empty and it still ran good. N/P's
But, I have been buying the gas at the same place for the last 2 weeks.
Now I kinda figure like I have heard other people say, that it does not like but 1 brand of gas.
I am going to test it again by getting gas at another place just to see, but it sure seems strange that it has not done this since getting the gas at this one place.

Fuel Systems are sensitive.
I had an older Mercedes that did what your car is doing and it turned out to be a tank purge valve (pre vapor recovery vehicle) mounted by the rear axle had filled with mud over the years and at about half a tank It would run out of gas because internal tank vacume.
I have a 80 toyota 4x4 PU and it did the same thing twice. First time it was the vapor recovery system had totaly cloged and the old tank vacume thing did it again. The second time with the toy was due to a bad gas cap.
OK, "Jeep," this is the Jeep thread? LOL!!!....My 88 cherokee was sputtering and running out of gas on grades and when it was hot and hard to start when hot (didn't matter how much gas it had.
It turns out that the shop that installed the re-man engine forgot to put the little mount back on the intake manifold that keeps the fuel line from contacting the manifold and the Jeep was vapor locking from excessive heat on the fuel line.
I found this out by looking at Jeeps in the bone yard to compair. Installed the part and the problem was fixed.
It sounds like you have replaced a lot of stuff. There is some little thing like that mount that is hiding somewere (of corse you know that by now) causing your problem, be dilligant.
In the past I have had good luck fixing odd problems on used cars that I have bought by going to the bone yard and making compairisons.
Hoped this helped.

Thanks BCBlues, but like I said it will run great on one brand of gas and like I also said, I tested it.
I let it get real low and bought gas at another place and run it and sure thing, it got to half a tank and did the same thing all over again, so I filled back up at my normal place I always use and no problem.
I feel kinda dumb at this point cause I had never had a vehicle to run just on one brand of gas before.

Perhaps the other gas station (bad gas) has water in ther tank.
You can check for this on your car by disconnecting the fuel line (after relieving the preassure) and pumping some gas into a clear glass container. If there is water in your gas you will see it at the bottom of the glass (the gas floats). There are various fuel treatments that you can buy that pour into the tank to cure this problem. I have had good luck with techron and stp gas treatments.
Good luck.

Once again BCBlues, thanks again for the reply.
I have tryed this at more than one other station with the same results.
Gets to half tank and runs like crap.
I think I will just buy my gas where it runs the best.

The Cat is new also.
Thanks.
Just a follow up. It runs like a champ all the way to empty on one place's gas so that is where I am buying it.
Thanks for all the replies.
