Damn! How I must have been in closet to miss this resurection.
The Go-Fast Truck Market heh...?
I have driven the SS, the SRT, and the Lightning...all 04's while
deciding on which. I was partial to the Lightnings already having
studied thier GEN II re-birth with the 99's, and then when they
slightly changed them with the 01's. (360 to 380HP), a few other
minor differences.
I've also had considerable seat time in the C5, 02 Viper GTS-the
New for 03+ SRT-Vipers, an the 03/04 Cobra's. Forced, N/A, what
ever? Each has it's own fun factor, just different ways to get there.
I thought that Chevys SS offering was a weak 3rd place entry to
begin with. The AWD is interesting as it does get off the line well,
but the extra cab weight and lack of HP, and it's body styling didn't
bode well for me.
The SRT was VERY interesting. 500ci V10 with 500 horses is the real
deal to say the least. Again it's subjective but the styling didn't WOW
me and the extra 500lbs or so made it feel heavy. Great for straight
line, but if I ever took the SRT to the track, it would need some
suspension upgrades. It just seems that the SRT was forced to some
degree. They've had the 8.0L 'Viper' engine for awhile now, and FORD
teased the market with the GEN I 93-95's L's, then came loaded for
Bear with the 99's to present. Dodge, you're a little late to the party.
The Lightning just felt...right. There's no other way to describe it. The
handling is WAY above the SRT and SS. And the 380 on the 01's and
up seem underated. I wasn't planning on buying NEW anyway, as I
was leaning Lightning from the get-go. But I thought if FORD set the
standard with the Lightning at a decent $34k msrp, and the competition
comes in with one less than stellar truck(the SS) at an almost $40k,
and then one straight-up competitor that's only slightly faster, but
again at $40k, the Lightning was still the way to go.
The GEN III Lightning will be an 06', and it's iffy for late 05', prolly Jan
06' at the earliest. I like the performance #'s(concept), and the
"SuperCooler" technology(that's been around btw), but the styling
left me a little unsettled.

Say About That"...
