Angry 2003 Windstar LX 3.8L - 1 or 2 Charcoal Canister's?

MOTORCRAFT CX1671 {#911304, F6DX9D653BA, F6DZ9D653BA}

https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...=1415236&jsn=1

I am being told by my shop, that there are an amazing 2 of these charcoal boxes inside the charcoal canister plastic housing/cover underneath the vehicle. I think they are losing their marbles.

Is this true? Is there just 1 or 2 charcoal boxes?

Looking at that part number and the link on RockAuto, you can see there are like 2 chambers in the 1 charcoal box.... but a Ford Diagram Clearly shows 1 charcoal canister and its associated plastic cover it sits in. They are making me buy 2 charcoal canisters... and I really and truly only feel I need 1 and I am no where near the vehicle right now to go look myself.

Anybody know?

FYI - We cannot get Gas to go into the gas tank even with the line from the gas tank to the charcoal box disconnected.... yet they still want to replace all of the following from the attached image:
9F945 - 1 quantity (Vapor Canister Vent Valve / Solenoid)
9D653 - 2 quantity (charcoal box)
9B328 - 1 quantity (vapor separator)

If the line to the charcoal box is disconnected when filling with fuel and it still spits the fuel back at you, doesn't that imply a problem with the gas tank itself and all these parts are a wild goose chase for nothing?

Glad to see this forum still going.

I don't know the answer to your question about the charcoal canister, but it seems like you should be able to "check" by asking that they return to you any parts that they remove.

Regarding the fueling issue... it could be a clogged EVAP system, but I believe it could also be a problem in the fill hose. If either one is restricted, then the fuel won't go in.

The EVAP system has a plastic line that exits the top of the fuel tank to carry fuel vapor to the canister. There are also two hoses in the fill system, one for fuel to flow in, one to vent the tank. I believe this is the main path for air to exit the tank during filling.

I'd make sure that is clear before messing with the EVAP system.

Red face Re: 2003 Windstar LX 3.8L - 1 or 2 Charcoal Canister's?

Thanks Tom. Good to see you are still there. Clint still around here?

Turns out (called dealer at Bob Utter Ford in Sherman, TX; great parts dept) that there actually are 2 charcoal canisters listed for the van of identical part numbers.

I just can't believe it.

But, I still do not think that this plan is going to fix the problem. I think its in the tank or fuel neck like you are saying. Even the Ford Diagnostic manual points to that and that same shop printed it out for me, but didn't read it.
