Project Evolution: 1/24 Peugeot T16 EVO 2 - Corse '86 - #5 B.Saby
This is my attempt at doing an Evo2 conversion of Tamiya's 205 T16 Evo1.
But first, some background on the car and the race: The Peugeot 205 T16 had made it's debut in Grp.B rallying at the 1984 Corsica Rally. Ari Vatanen had led the race until he left the track and destroyed the car, handing the victory over to Lancia. One year later, in 1985, it was the 'Corse again where a heavily modified EVO 2 version made it's first appearance. However, Bruno Saby was beaten by Jean Ragnotti in a Renault 5 Turbo. So, in 1986, Peugeot was exetremely determined to finally win the race. They did, but at what a price: This was the race where Lancia Pilots Henri Toivonen and Sergo Cresto were killed in a terrible accident that ultimately also brought an end to Group B. On the podium, there was no celebration. Winners Bruno Saby and Francois Fauchille stayed inside their car. In spite of the tragic circumstances, this is a very fascinating car to me, representing the climax of Grp.B rallying both on a historic, and a technical level. Re: Project Evolution: 1/24 Peugeot T16 EVO 2 - Corse '86 - #5 B.Saby
I have made myself a nice little transkit for my build:
The rear wing is from Heller's Evo 2, as well as the front canard wings and the decals, which seem to look ok. Other than that, the Heller kit is pure trash because it ignores most of the changes from Evo 1 to Evo 2 (e.g. the complete engine comartment). The wheels are frome reji and look suitable. I will also use some parts, like the engine and bigger brakes, from Tamiya's Peugeot 405 T16 Grand Raid, which itself was based on an advanced 205 T16. |

Brakes and drivetrain:
Left ... 205 T16 Evo1 // right ... 405 T16 GR (should be very similar to 205 T16 Evo2), both from Tamiya. The most work will probably be required around the inner rear wheel arches and I've only just startet to do some cutting. The whole rear suspension is different on the Evo 2. Some ref pics that I am using: |

As said before, the rear inner wheel arches require quite some work.
Left ... Evo 1 setup / Right .. something that will hopefully resemble Evo 2 later on: Evo 2: lots of putty - lots of sanding - some paint. |

Evo 1 rear wing delete and Heller Evo 2 wing (will need some refinement):
Air scoop closed (Evo 2 will have one for the driver and one for the codriver): |

Just for comparison, this is how the upcoming Profil 24 kit will apparently do it:

that's nice let's wait if the movie comes here, too. the 205 seems to have the wrong inlet manifold, though.

Re: Project Evolution: 1/24 Peugeot T16 EVO 2 - Corse '86 - #5 B.Saby
Converted front valance to Evo 2 and added airdam and canards off the Heller kit.
It really is starting to look like an Evo 2 now. |

Re: Project Evolution: 1/24 Peugeot T16 EVO 2 - Corse '86 - #5 B.Saby
Thank you all.
The Evo2 has some additional strenghtening bars between the rear dual wishbones, so I had to fabricate those. This required a slightly differente build order than in the manual: First fit the engine and transmission to one part of the frame, then the rear differential, then the other part of the frame. Since my wheel arches became a bit high, I had to extend the shock absorbers. The inlet manifold off Tamiya's 405 T16 Grand Raid (Dakar) is of a different type and also needed minor modifications. |
