95 Ram CEL

95 360 engine, 2WD, auto, 165k

I am trying to help someone by email with the vehicle, so it is difficult.

Seems like he has a code 32 (EGR system) but the strange thing is that the check engine light does not come on until the coolant temperature gaauge needlle starts to move off the cold mark. Looking at the wiring fiagrams there is a tranny temp sensor in the same circuit as the coolant temp sensor and egr and evaporative cansister purge solenoid.

Reverse does not work in the vehicle so I am thinking that possibly the tranny has a bad torque conveerer and overheats in a short period of time and sets the cel light. He says it has the towing package.

I am having him redo the key dance again for codes to see which are present since he did remove the battery cablee for a while to clear the codes.

Any thoughts, am I way off base on this or not.

Thanks

Re: 95 Ram CEL

EGR is not activated until engine is up to operating temp so that makes sense. OBD1 does not have a comprehensive component monitor like OBD2. I'm not trying to be a smart-$$s but the torque converter does not know what gear the driver has selected. Sounds like rebuild time.

Thanks i did not think of the egr not operating until engine warms up, I thought when the engine rpm increase the transducer vacuum opens the egr valve

He understands that the tranny needs to be rebuilt, I thought that maybe the fluid was getting overheated in a short period of travel and trigering the cel light. I had a 98 that tranny overheated and had a bad torque converter, acutally redid tranny and replaced the torque converter twice. (Tranny shop)

thanks for input
