01 Ram wont crank

I shouldn't have had the topic say it wouldn't crank, it does turn over. I have a 01 Ram 1500, 318. Over the last few weeks after I drive and shut it off, I might have to wait a few minutes to start it again. This has happened to my wife a few times. Could this be a fuel pump problem?

Re: 01 Ram wont crank

The starter cranks the engine over but the engine doesn't start?

Is the Check Engine Light on?

Re: 01 Ram wont crank

no check engine light. The motor cranks and runs fine, but after you turn it off and go to start it again it might not crank up for a few minutes or so, for example, my wife drove it to the store, she called me and said she tried several times to start it. After about 10 or 15 minutes I showed up and tried to start it and it started right up. Then she drove it home. This has happened 3 times so far.

Re: 01 Ram wont crank

Well I finally got the truck to not start for me. Drove up to the store, after getting home, I turned the truck off and tried to start it. It would start, but after I took my foot off of the gas it would shut off. After 4 or 5 times it finally stayed running. I can hear the fuel pump running the whole time, I dont have a pressure guage, but I pressed the shrader valve and got plenty. Dont know if this is a fuel problem or something else. Any advise would be appreciated.

Re: 01 Ram wont crank

Next time it refuses to start, check for spark plug fire. You can use another spark plug, just unplug the easiest wire to get to, ground it good then have someone crank the engine over while you observe the spark.

If the spark looks good, remove the air cleaner top & pour 1 tablespoon gasoline down the throttle body. Now start the engine.

Re: 01 Ram shuts off after start

Had a friend hook a scan tool to the truck and didn't find much of a problem. I tested the fuel pressure and got 47psi. When I rev the motor up and let off the gas it shuts off. If I ease off the gas slowly it will stay running. The engine doesn't miss or skip. Could it be a weak battery, dist. cap, rotor or coil or maybe a fuel problem. The scan tool did pick up a restriction at the filter. But I might as well change the pump. Just trying not to spend any unneccesary money.

Re: 01 Ram wont crank

Sounds like the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve is sticking shut.
After idling a bit, does the engine die when you put it in gear?
