ABS/Brake & OD off lights

Last year I had all of these lights coming on. I took it to a tranny shop had the tranny and torque converter replaced. Took it to the dealer had the recall done.

Still all of the lights still came on. Took it back to the tranny shop and every time it came up with a torque converter/clutch error, they replaced the tranny and torque converter again. Still got the OD off light.

In the mean time I'm still randomly getting the ABS/brake light coming on.

Winter hits and the temperature drops. All winter I had no lights coming up on the dash. Now that it is hot weather again the ABS/Brake lights and OD off light are back on the dash.

Ideas??? anyone.

Re: ABS/Brake & OD off lights

ABS/Brake light can be caused by low brake fluid in the master cylinder....even very slightly low can do this.
Also, wheel speed sensors.
Newer, 1999 and newer, have had issues with the ABS units.....according to posts here......but not real common.......this would include a unit that is under the driver's side floor pan as well as the big unit up front, but I would eliminate the cheaper, more common (and easier) possibilities first.

Possible causes for the OD light are Neutral Safety Switch....also called Transmission Range Sensor (TRS).....mounted on top of the transmission, the cable from the shift lever connects to it.
Vehicle speed sensor, speedometer cable connects to it, back of transmission......above the front most catalytic converter.

The intermediate shaft speed sensor......also called Turbine Speed Sensor (TSS), located on the transmission case next to where the driver's side drive shaft comes out is NOT a common fail item....but could cause issues....maybe verify that it is connected or not damaged.
This sensor measures the speed of the shaft that comes OUT of the torque converter.
I only think of it since they have replaced the torque converter.......so it is related.

Re: ABS/Brake & OD off lights

So I took the easiest and cheapest way out. I replaced the range sensor (neutral saftey switch). I will monitor and post updates. If this doesn't work I'll be crawling under the car for the OSS replacement.

Just for reference the 2001 Windstar shows it has two vechicle speed sensors. 1) VSS (vehicle speed sensor) and 2) OSS (output speed sensor).

The one everyone talks about replacing is the OSS.

Re: ABS/Brake & OD off lights

So I replaced the neutral safety switch on the tranny and it went for awhile without the od off light coming on but today the weather had warmed up and it came back on. So I guess I'll be replacing the output speed sensor.

I replaced every sensor and tranny control device I could get my hands on my '99, about $400 bucks worth. My symptoms seemed to be the same as yours. Finally replaced tranny with Ford reman. Did the work myself. That was almost 100k miles ago. Problem free so far .... knock on wood!

Re: ABS/Brake & OD off lights

I have little faith in tranny shops ... but a lot of faith in Ford reman units. Have replaced one Winny tranny and one Escort tranny thus far. Good results both times ... followed the instructions to the letter.
