Re: 95 Escort head

Its not that simple. Assuming this is for a 1.9L engine, the tightening instructions show the sequence you do the tightening in. This is basically starting with the middle bolts, and going alternately to the left and right ones, going out away from the center in a sort of 'circular' pattern. The first 'round' of torquing is to 29-44 lb-ft. Then you loosen them all two turns, and retighten to 44 lbs-ft, in a couple of steps. (like all of them to 25 lbs-ft first, then all to 44 lbs-ft). Then comes the part that always makes me anxious. You then turn all the bolts 90 degrees, in the sequence going out from the center bolts. Then, to complete the tightening, you turn them all an addition 90 degrees, in the sequence going out from the center bolts.
And heaven help you if you forget whether you have turned one of the bolts that last 90 or 180 degrees!!

You should also run a tap into all the bolt holes to clean them out, and make sure they dont have much oil in their bottom. And run a die down the threads of the bolts to make sure there arent any burrs. And the bolts should be new ones - you arent supposed to re-use the bolts on a 1.9L engine. Installing and tightening them will actually stretch and twist the bolts somewhat. The threads should be lightly oiled before you start.

Im in the Rio Grande valley by the way; Hidalgo County.

And of course dont forget the locating dowels!

That part always freaks me out... with my big ol' torque wrench it seems like such a BIG turn!
