98 b1500 front end noise
i have a 98 b1500 conversion van 80k on it..lately ive been noticing a loud "rubbing or deep howling" noise while in motion from the passenger side only. im thinking bearings? i havent had the chance to jack it up and take a look yet. does that seem right by my description? is this an easy job?

ok..jacked it up after work. wheel has play in it side to side..pretty tight up and down. looks like im buying some bearings tomorrow

Sounds like what happened to me. In my case, when I was on the highway and would go around a curve to the right, the noise would go away. I figured it was because the weight shifted off the right front wheel bearing. So I took the RF apart and found the inner wheel bearing was dry and rusted. The funny part was that the bearing was only a year or so old. In my case, the wheel bearing seal failed and allowed water to enter the bearing, which resulted in it's premature failure.

Could be bearings or could be a warped brake disc. either way, inspect both while the wheel is off.
Usually, it's the front inner wheel bearings wear out first. BUT, if you replace them, replace both inner and outer at the same time. And if you do one side, do the other. This way the alignment and pull will remain balanced.  |
