1999 GMC Jimmy brake problem

Not long ago I had my rear brake pads replaced. A few days ago, I heard an awful rubbing noise coming from my rear wheel. Thought it was mud since I have been driving through a lot of it. Took the tire off and checked it out. The inside pad was shot and it looked like the outside pad had barely wore. It seems that the brake is not releasing or something. I put in new pads last night. I drove to work today and when I got to work, It smelled hot. The rim was hot. I can't hear any rubbing and it does not seem like it pulls hard. Any ideas? If the brake is not releasing, what has to be done?

The caliper slides are probably frozen

The caliper must be removed and the slide pins removed replaced if too corroded or cleaned up greased with high temp caliper lube, also check the caliper itiself.

We can get the caliper to compress but when the brakes are applied and released it does not release. Also took out the slide pins and lubed them. Brakes still smell hot. Inside pad is rubbing. Going to replace the caliber. Thank you for your help maxwedge. It is greatly appreciated.

If the inboard pad wears faster, the caliper piston is binding in the bore of the caliper. If the outboard pad wears faster, the hardware, (guide pins etc) is binding. Always best to replace the entire assembly when doing rear brakes on these vehicles. Complete loaded assembly includes the caliper, pads, all hardware and the mounting bracket. Do it right one time and be done with it!
