96 Tracker 1.6 Engine

I was on the autozone web site today and if I remember correctly it said that having the battery unhooked could cause you to have the computer "re-learn" it function's. Is this correct and if so could that cause it to not want to ide? I know it will certainly cause this on a 4.3 Chevy v-6 cause my dad has had it happen before. The idle on my tracker is great when cold but act's up when warm. I checked the voltage at the plug at the IAC valve it is 9.3 which I believe is good, and the resistance is 13 olhms. I did not use the jumper wire from the IAC valve to the battery because I don't know which pin is 1 and which is 2 and didn't want to destroy the valve if it is good. Any body have any more thoughts on this? Which pin is 1 and which is 2 and what would be the min. size fuse I could use in the jumper wire? I would rather blow a fuse than have one to big and defeat the purpose of having one.
