Which gets better gas milage, diesel or gasoline?

I don't currently have a Volkswagon, but am considering getting one.

I've heard that the diesels get anywhere from 45 to 50 mpg. However, they say the gasolines only get in the 30's somewhere. (I only heard it, though). Does anyone know how much the gasolines get compared to the diesels? Thanks.

this is taken from the parkers car guide site from the uk ,i would recommend a diesel purely from my biased point that i sell peformance plug in tuning units for diesels ,for vw engined cars these are not expensive £99 +post and they improve your hp by 25% and torque and you also gain at least 3-5mpg as well ,any queries for any diesel tuning contact dieseltuning_units@tiscali.co.uk,mpg is the second last figure
