Sometimes auto makers sell a car with it's transmission at the rear of the car. This gives more equal weight distribution to all four wheels and results in better handling. What I think you're refering to is a halibrand type transmission which is a transmission and differntial in one unit. These are popular with racers in that they are easily dis-assembled and gear ratios are easily interchanged.
