Transmission wont shift into 3rd and 4th gear

Clear out of the blue, no prior warning. Sunfire 98 Auto 2.4L won't shift into 3 or 4th gear. Any ideas besides new tranny? Appreciate any thoughts or assistance. Still owe 2000 on the vehicle- one garage is quoting 1800-2000 for rebuilt.

Re: Transmission wont shift into 3rd and 4th gear

Is it an automatic? I had the same problem only because my friend and I beat the crap out of my catalytic converter to try and make it louder.

When I drove it for those few days after, which I shouldn't have....it would barely and I mean BARELY shift outta 1st gear and into second.

That was my problem and an easy fix.....bought a new cat and welded it on
