Front Lower Control Arm Replacement 1990 LX 5.0L
I'd like to replace the stock control arms on my vehicle. Is this a job that can be done at home or should I take it to a garage? I am pretty handy with car repair and have performed many repairs to various vehicles. The most complicated was replacing the clutch on this same vehicle.
I am concerned about the hazards involved with the coil springs on the control arms. What needs to be done with them for a lower control arm replacement? One video snipit I saw didn't show any kind of compression tool on the springs as the control arms was removed. I need some guidance here. Thanks.

Re: Front Lower Control Arm Replacement 1990 LX 5.0L
First, if not removed correctly, you can really hurt and possibly kill yourself. The front springs are under a lot of pressure and if you get the ball joint separated without a jack under it, you will hurt yourself. I have removed mine on my 01 Cobra and also replaced my ball joints and replaced the bushings with polys. You need some specialty tools. If you've not done this kind of job before, I really urge you to be VERY careful or consider going to a shop.
I did a write up on SVT Performance for New Edge Mustangs to replace ball joints with photos. That does not show removing the front springs, however. BE CAREFUL if you try this. And, it is hard to get the springs back in once they are removed. |
