How to burn out in a RWD.

Okay so I figured this would be the best place to ask the following question.

Ive always wondered about doing burnouts in RWDs, I know how you do them but Ive never owned a RWD till now so its never bothered me to do them in other peoples cars.
I know your supposed to hold down the brakes to lock the front tires but what about the damage to the rear brakes?

I beliece for the most part with you having a stick you would want to give it gas, drop the clutch so the wheels spin, and then hop on the brake real fast to keep it from launching. As for your rear brakes being hurt....that would be one of my least concerns. Tires and transmission would be my first two (tranny first). I would say just hold in the brake just hard enough to keep your front wheels locked so that you dont move. I did it once in my Ram I used to have but only once. I was always worried something would break.

Others may tell you to work the brake and clutch at the same time with one foot while slipping the clutch and giving it gas but that would very hard on your clutch.

I've kinda wondered this myself, especially with a manual car, which is all I drive beside the Chevy Silverado, which is rarely. I mean I always hear hold the brake pedal with your left foot, and then give it gas with your right foot on automatics.

But unless you have 3 legs(insert penis joke here) how would you do it on a manual car without stalling. I've never tried it because I think its just too hard to switch out from clutch brake and gas so quickly, unless your really good at heel-toeing, which I'm not. Any other tips??

Easy way to do it...

Rev gas with right foot.
Hold clutch in with left foot.
Dump clutch, quickly move left foot to brake.
Hold left foot on brake as needed.

Note: this is the first time I'd ever tried it a burnout in a manual car... so my foot work was a little slow, that's why the car lurches... plus I didn't figure it'd start to move that quickly given the wheelspin...

Um, well, you just hold the brake, and give it gas till it burns out.

That's if it's RWD of course. There's just one less step involved, no dumping of the clutch.

haha so i drive an automatic (97 lumina) and i managed to stall it. yeah i'm so talented i stalled an auto. i had it in neutral and i was with my friend and these people were taking forever to cross the sidewalk in front of a store so i could keep going. so with it in neutral and my foot on the brake i rev it just a tad and the whole thing makes a weird noise and shuts off on me. wth? then it wouldnt' start for a bit then it did. /hijack

The reason I ask is cause my brother in law is this huge American car guy and loves his rwd 80s cars. anyway he got pissed cause I wouldnt let him do burnouts in the GTO.

he said yeah, duh.
I think to myself "man thats gotta be murder on the rear pads and disk.....how the hell does it not damage all that stuff?"

I mean sreiously that is too much friction, even more then what it would see under racing conditions at a road course or something.

A short burn out like what I did in the video won't do much harm at all, mostly the tires.

80% of your braking force comes from the front tires anywho, so the car can easily over power the rear brakes. If you were to do a long long burnout, like a couple minutes worth you may warp the rotors.

I saw a video once if a dude in England with a Cosworth Escort, homeboy was doing donuts/drifts and burnouts for about 5 minutes straight, you could see the rear rotors glowing. I'm sure he had some warped rotors afterwards.

Yeah back when i had my s-10 it was stick and when i was about to get rid of it i did a huge burnout it made my tires bald and i warped the brakes. But when i did it for only a few seconds it really didnt do anything. But it only had one tire fire but it still smoked them like nothin else

yea....we're like that.

my friends an i did that in an M3. my friend put new tyres on it then did a burnout until they blew. when the smoke cleared the disks were still glowing for a short while. while it was burning out if there wasn't smoke in the way you could see them glowing bright orange.

Ha... the video was also taken at night, so it was really evident that they were a wee bit hot.
