Thermostat for the 3.4L V6 1998+
- You'll need coolant, either DEX or which ever you might be using now. Do NOT mix the old green and new Dex, it'll form into a gel substance and clog up your engine, radiator, and heater core. - A drain pan, and an assortment of metric wrenches. - A thermostat, you can use a typical 195 deg or the lower temp one at 180 deg (which is best IMO if you have done any engine modifications). Thermostat removal- - Disconnect the battery. - Next drain your coolant down a little. * drain on the bottom of the drivers side of the radiator. Should be a plastic valve handle facing the bumper, if it doesnt want to turn I wouldnt force it, it could break and then leak. Your other option would be to drain it from the lower radiator hose, you wont need much drained to complete this job. And you can also just allow it to drain from the thermostat housing as it's removed, though you need drain pans underneath to catch the coolant. Dont need to contaminate the ground. - Next Remove the recirculator tube(surge tank line) from the top of the thermostat housing. #3 in the pic below. * You will need two wrenches, one to hold the larger brass fitting the other to loosen the line fitting. * Line wrenches work best without rounding. - Remove the upper hose from the thermostat housing(#1). *Optional - Remove the air intake tube, possibley the air box if you need more room. - You may need to remove the crossover heat sheild(but can be done without removing) to access the thermostat housing bolts. Heat sheild bolts are probley rusty and may need some penitrating fluid to loosen them. - Using a short 13mm remove the upper thermostat housing bolt. Then loosen the lower bolt, you may be able to remove the housing without removing the lower bolt all the way as the housings lower bolt hole is open. If not, then carefully remove the lower bolt, and try not droping it into the trans/subframe/abyss area. (items removed for clearity) - You may need to work the housing around to get it, sometimes the thermostat hangs up in the intake. - When reinstalling the thermostat, the spring goes into the intake. I find it easier to put the thermostat in and then work the housing back over it. Making sure the thermo gasket isn't pinched in the housing before tightening back up. - Bolts tighten to 18 Ft Lbs(if you can get a torq wrench on it)And tighten bolts evenly so not to crack the thermostat housing. - Reinstall top radiator hose if removed, and or the lower hose , if drained from there. - Tighten the surge line at the top of the thermostat housing snug. - Reinstall the air intake and accompanying parts and plugins. - Check reservoir , fill if needed. - Reconnect battery - Start engine and allow to warm up to operating temprature with cap off the reservoir. - When warm look for leaks around the housing and all other hoses disconnected. - If no leaks, you are done. And Please Dispose of old coolant properly, not into the ground. Most oil change shops will take it for free and recycle it. Have a great week!
