1998 Legacy No Reverse

Bought a 1998 Legacy at salvage auction. Battery was dead so jumped it and backed on a tow dolly for the 90 mile trip home. When I got it home jumped it again and pulled it off dolly but when I wanted to back up..no reverse. Drive and all other forward selections work. What happened? Can it be fixed? Am I out of a repairable wreck? 1998 Legacy coupe 2.2L AWD AT. Thanks in advance for any help.
