Question 02 santefe rack and pinion leaking

Does anyone know where I can get a exploded diagram view of the steering rack, so I can replace the seals?

The steering rack is normally replaced as an assembly.

Re: 02 santefe rack and pinion leaking

Thanks for the reply, but I have studied on this one a lot, I'm the type that doesn't believe in paying through the nose for labor. A stickler I guess, if I cant get the job done I'll just buy the rack, but I will have at least given it my best shot. I love a challenge, and the lord knows I took one on this time. I'll let you know how it's going, I started today and will hopefully finish tomorrow, I hope.
Thanks again! jim
P.S. I did replace both front axles, and the struts, ball joints etc.... saved a ton of money. I just hope this will turn out as well as the other repairs I've already done!!!

Re: 02 santefe rack and pinion leaking

I wish you luck. I think it can be done, its really just about getting the RIGHT seals and putting it back together right. I know you can get a rack on ebay pretty dang cheap with a nice warranty, just for thought. Like the previous poster said, they usually are replaced as an assembly, but if you want to get down and dirty, more power to you!

EDIT;; Also make sure once you get in there, that the walls of the rack and nice and smooth, make sure there isnt any big scratches and scuffs. If so just buy a new one.

Re: 02 santefe rack and pinion leaking

Lol, thanks for the support, I'm an Aries, as stubborn as they come. Worked on my own vehicles most of my life. I was raised in the auto-body business, my father, uncle, brother, and in laws all have shops. My oldest sister drag-raced, my lil brother races and does body work, I just finished rebuilding a totaled out 98, Buick Riviera. I own a 95' Riviera my self, and have done all the needed repairs on it. I'm gonna give this Hyundai a shot,

Parts are hard to obtain and the rebuilders are reasonable for a rebuilt unit.
http://www.cvsource.com/ is where I used to purchase them when I had a garage.

What Im wondering is have you checked the fluid, and do you need to add any. If you have to add fluid, there is a lead somewhere. Next is finding the leak. If there is alot of fluid oil residue on the Rack and Pinion Boots then it is probably leaking internally there. Just try and track down where the leak is coming from.

If its not low on fluid and is still making that noise, its probably just the pump.
