Re: Fender Flares

If you look at the first picture of the yellow car the vents should be on both sides of the hood where the # 15 is located.

Re: Fender Flares

@ Werling....That would put the vent on either side of the radiator shroud. I don't think that would vent any of the radiator. If you layout the radiator on the hood the back side of the radiator is located beyond the center hood bulge roughly 6" +/-. So the vents need to be where you and I both placed the center pair of vents. The only thing I am considering is building the shroud to connect the radiator directly to the vented area.

Many race cars have this type of opening, look at a currrent GT-Ford for example or many of the Can Am cars or IMSA cars. Air coming into the engine compartment thur the radiator acts as a parachut, it needs to exit some where. Just my opinion.
Yes agree with above on the "parachute" comment. The air comes in through the radiator and hits the engine mass and slows as it looks for a way out. Idea is to dflect the air up just in front of the engine and out through the bonnet. This is normally via a large opening which is either completely open or has a large lovre set up (due volume of air).

The louvres you are fitting will do some of the job as they will relieve any high pressure areas resulting from the air flow slowing as it hits the engine mass.

I am going to look at this over the off season (April next year) and as part of fitting a flat bottom and Ford GT diffusers that I have already purchased.

Re: Fender Flares

Brian. You are right the openings need to be behind the radiator, I may attemp to build what I think would work so the air coming thur the radiator will just move up and out close to the front of the hood.

Re: Fender Flares

Did the vent lower oil temps? Where did you get that vent?

Re: Fender Flares

The vent is from a GT-500, I cut it to size(took about 6" out of the middle) Seems to have lowered oil temps, although I never ran TOO hot anyway, and the motor runs nice and cool, and cuts down on some of the hood buffeting.

Wes, did you get a chance to measure any underbonnet pressures prior to selecting the location of the hood vents? I am looking at this mod prior to upcoming NZ Endurance champs and want to make sure pacement is optimal.

Post fitment could you discern any reduction in water or oil temps?

Thanks, Kel.

Re: Fender Flares

I put the ventss where I though they would work best without any real research, I think they have help reduce temps but I did not due a before or after test to see the difference. One thing I can tell you is that the vents are real hot at the end of a 30 min. race.

Thanks for the feedback Wes.

Re: Fender Flares

Brian did you notice any difference with the hood events when you ran at Daytona? From the video it looks like your hood and windshield are not moving the way the did in previous videos. What is the verdict on the hood vents?

Re: Fender Flares

Well....Things are much more stable since I welded in 4 supports and made custom bent beefy "T" braces at three locations for the windshield. So that eliminated that issue. Since I am having overheating issues that are new I am not sure on the cooling properties of the vents. On the aero properties I would say absolutely. I was on the rev limiter much earlier than previously and my lap times dropped right away from my last time there in May. It was cooler so that will also help but I felt like I was getting to top speed much easier. Without data I cannot prove it but my seat of the pants has lead me this far so I think its calibrated :-)
