Turn Signal/Combination Switch help

I bought a used replacement turn switch for half the price of a new one (which runs about $140). I was wondering if someone could help me figure out whether or not this used switch works before I go through the trouble of replacing my old one. Is there someway to access the connecting wire without taking apart the entire steering column?

My problem (if interested, please read on!):
I have a faulty turn signal switch on my 1991 300E benz (175k miles) that causes my headlights to go out. I have to keep pressure on the switch to keep my headlights on (either pushing the switch forward to keep brights on, or gently squeezing the switch towards me to keep regular head lights on--brights do not work when pulling the switch all the way towards me).

Is anyone experienced in disassembling the steering column? I plan on doing this job myself, but I have no experience in this and am worried about the air bag and the alignment of the spline and hub. I would appreciate it if you contacted me via email (black555shadow@yahoo.com) so I could ask you a few questions. Thanks!
