Question Need a little assistance with the material (ragtop, vinyl?) used on truck roofs

Folks, I need some assistance understanding a bit better what material they used on this (ragtop) look on pickup truck bed roofs back in the 80s and early 90s. Here are some links to pictures of what i'm talking about:

I want to replicate this on a Hilux model. Back when I was a kid I remember seeing these kinds of trucks a lot and remember the fabric was thin. I have an 82 Oldsmobile with a vinyl top above the quarter panel window and cant remember the material they used for those trucks being as thick as a vinyl top. Of course, i was a kid so I could just be confusing myself. I'm trying to figure out if this is a vinyl top they used or something else, perhaps the same fabric they use on ragtops, which i'm assuming are two different things?

And while we're on the subject, i've searched for ways to replicate vinyl and have seen the tutorials on masking tape overlapped and painted. I'm curious what was used to secure the tape on and prevent it from later detaching itself off if and when its adhesive dries. And has there been any new ideas to achieve the vinyl look? I once tried Testors base and vinyl spray cans and i felt the texture was a little too large, or was it just another bad spray nozzle Testors is infamous for?

Thanks in advanced guys.
