Re: 99 Mountaineer speaker issues?

Do you know which grade of sound system you have? Some use external amplifiers. Which "trunk" speakers are you referring to? Do you mean the single subwoofer in the cargo area? Do the front speakers that do would sound distorted, or do you mean "garbage" because the subwoofer is not providing the low frequency sound and the rear seat fill is missing?

The factory subwoofer is mounted in the area that would sometimes be a little cubby hole on the passenger side rear of the cargo area, opposide of where the jack is located. It doesn't protrude into the cargo area.

The service manual implies you need to remove the entire chunk of rear interior trim on that side to get to the subwoofer box and amp assembly. It appears the assembly extends up over the wheel well area.

Re: 99 Mountaineer speaker issues?

I bought a 99 mountaineer 3 years ago.
It came with an aftermarket radio in it.
I hate it with a passion and I aim on finding a decent factory stereo to go back in it. I see slots on the interior of the rear gate hatchback or whatever it's called. I have four functioning speakers. One on each door. I looked up the wiring diagram and it shows wiring for four rear speakers. Have any of you experienced speakers in the hatchback? When I work in my yard I'll have the hatchback up with the radio on and there's no sound coming from it. I don't wanna tear it open to see if there's speakers in it. I'd like to think that it would hold at least some 6X9's back there. Or a set of 8" rounds or 10" rounds. Lol!
Thank You in advance for any input on this matter. ☺

Re: 99 Mountaineer speaker issues?

With the Mach audio system you could get a subwoofer in the rear, but it was not in the liftgate, it was to the side of the rear cargo area.

None of the audio systems had speakers in the liftgate stock according to the factory service manual. I doubt there's speaker wiring out to the liftgate unless a previous owner added it.
