Smile Re: Spun Rod bearing 3.8

Popping in new bearings on any motor as a fix is always a gamble; sometimes it works. I am in line with Maxwedge and others. If you could find a good used engine, that would be time best spent but you could try your 'light' repair and use the van while you are looking for a doner. Who knows maybe your repair will last for a zillion years. I put 'alerts' on kijiji searches and get decent results. I'm not a facebooker but apparently 'marketplace' has activity. There is a 93 Transsport in Pick Yer Part (or whatever it's called now) in Edmonton, the last time I looked. Maybe they will pull it for you $? Call Forest Lawn Auto Parts in Calgary. I'm assuming you are in Alberta, sorry.

I think the quick fix is worth a try seeing you have it apart to that point now. Everyone has different approaches. I myself would try the light fix while looking for a doner motor. You don't have a lot to lose that way. I would do that with mine; it has 440,000 km on it... but then they are famous for the frames rusting out, so it could get scrapped... I sure would hate to scrap it; frames can be repaired too. The TransSport might not be a top collector's classic but they are pretty keen.

UPDATE: I'm sorry, Jeff it looks like I missed seeing tbe rest of the pages in your thread. My post is alot redundant but not totally😳

Re: Spun Rod bearing 3.8

Jeff,
Did you get that LIM leak solved? Long time ago on a 283, I had the rubber manifold gasket blues. The gasket was squeezing out of poaition when I torqued it down. I finally used a sharp center punch to put divits in the block and manifold surfaces, to 'hold' the gasket in place. I think I used yellow weather strip adhesive on the one surface too. I wasn't going to take that thing apart again for the 4th time! Might any of this apply to your leak issue?

Tinkering:
Still have a bit of oil dripping. Haven't had time to investigate further but if it is still the LIM, I'm just going to live with it. Not doing any damage, engine runs good, just leaves unsightly stains on the driveway that annoy the hang out of me

Re: Spun Rod bearing 3.8

Hey,
I had a rear main seal leak on my pickup that I didn't want to tackle. I bungeed a bread pan under there to catch the drips. You can drop it occasionally and drain the pan, or put a plug in the pan. Sounds goofy but it saved me dropping transfer cases and trannies and stuff
Another idea, if the underside configuration allows, is to cut a jug in half and bungee the top half upside down. You can just unscrew the cap to drain the collected drips. It's all dependant on where the drips are. The proximity to the exhaust is why I switched to the bread pad... it doesn't melt
