McLaren P1
Got this in today. It's Airfix's McLaren P1.
I started in on it right away just to see what it would look like built up. All in all it looks pretty good. The level of detail is actually quite high and looks fairly accurate. With a little effort it should build up to a pretty nice looking curbside kit. As far as what needs to be replace, the interior is very poor just a couple of seats and a dash. The wheels and tires also need to go and I've just ordered a Motormax P1 to use as a donor for the interior and wheels/tires. I'll also be adding some carbon fiber. Dave Thibodeau already built one of these, mine wont be nearly as nice, but he shows what can be done with this simple kit. Here's a shot of his. I will absolutely be copying as much detail from his to put into mine. I started by getting some of the body components attached together to correct the seems that shouldnt be there. I'll update again in the morning. David |

Re: McLaren P1
Small update:
Car has been disassembled and the major body parts glued together. Panels seems have been filled in and sanded out and now its in primer. Need to scribe some of the lines abit deeper and check for more imperfections to clean up before next coat of test primer. Got the day off today, so maybe I can get abit more done later on. Thanks for looking. Comments and criticisms always welcome. David Last edited by griffin-gt40; 07-27-2016 at 10:15 AM. |

Re: McLaren P1
Cool project! Sadly this might end up being the closest we get to a 1:24 P1!

Re: McLaren P1
I dont think it officially has a scale. From what someone else posted on another forum about it, is it is like 1/26th length wise and like 1/22 width wise, but when put up against a 1/24 or 1/25 scale it looks pretty good. You'd have to look really close to see that it might be abit smaller. I'll post a shot up tomorrow.
As of now, its been stripped back to bare plastic. I wet sanded the primer and cleaned it then shot some GC white primer over it as a base for the blue I'm going to use and for some reason the white primer "lifted the grey right off the plastic. I've used the combo before with no problem, only thing I can think of is I hit it too hard in a couple spots and the primer burned the grey causing it to lift. Anyways, I got it stripped but was busy cleaning my garage today so, hopefully tomorrow I can re-prime it and then move on to the colour this week. David |

Re: McLaren P1
I took some measurements and some photos
The P1 is about 190mm long (my caliper only opens up to 150 and the balance is about 38-40mm, I just eyeballed the placement, but its pretty close. The width is 78mm. Real car is 4588mm L x 1946mm W. Pics of it up against the new Revell Ford GT 1/24 scale. I've had a busy week, I'm hoping this weekend to do some work on this project and clean up my hobby room as I just bought a new puppy today that comes home in 3 1/2 weeks and I need to have anything model related locked away in the hobby room to avoid disasters. So hopefully some re-prime and paint this weekend. David |
