Marty's Black 180
I'm finally settled in after my move overseas...time for a new project!
After checking out my OS Giken Fairlady build, a guy I work with wanted me to build a copy of his 1:1 ride...a Nissan 180SX, (soon to be a RHD converted 240SX). This one is going to be a bit of a long term project since my new job has severely cut into my build time. Also, he's giving me imputs along the way as he builds, and buys parts for his car. I'm shooting to get it close as I can, but a few things will be a little off since there really isn't the parts available in scale form, and I don't have the resources to make them...mainly his wheels...Origin DNA's, so Volk TE37's will have to work. Like most of my builds, I started off fabbing up the engine...a SR20DET. I decided against the Aoshima, and The Parts box SR's because I feel that they have a lot to be disired in the looks department...I'm not settling for close enough! He currently has a red top SR in his car which he is yanking out to send back to the states. The red top head is a little bit simpler to fabricate because of the flat valve cover, and no VVT on the front, so I'm not complaining. Here's the progress so far: Block: Short block assembly minus timing cover: And a few shots of it mocked up in the car: This motor is 100% scratchbuilt by me. Still a lot more to go on the fab work. Right now, I'm concenterating on getting the components fabbed up and test fitted before finalizing the rest of the details...More to come... Jimmy

Re: Marty's Black Missile
Thanks guys!
I got a bit more done today. I fabbed up the valve cover, and timing chain cover...just the oil pan is left for the main parts. I made it so you could see the coil packs...that is when I get around to making them . I didn't get all of teh ribbing detail on the timing chain cover, but I feel that the effect is still funcional. Here's what I've got so far: I still have more detail to add to the components. I'm just doing a little bit at a time so I don't get burned out. Thanks for looking. Jimmy

Re: Marty's Black Missile
It's been a while since I've got back to this one. Last year was a busy for me.
As I said in the 3T-G thread, I'm going to take a break, and knock out some comision work...mainly this little Beast. It's been almost a year since I told my friend that I would build his car, so I need to get back cracking on it. Most of you know that I'm never really satisfied with any of my builds, so this one was not an exception. The more I looked at my block timing cover, head and valve cover, the more I didn't like what I saw. So, I decided to start all over from scratch. I fabbed up a new block, timing cover and an all new upper oil pan. Here's a comparison of the two blocks: and a couple of shots with my old head, and valve cover...for reference sake...(I'll be fabbing up new ones of those as well :wink): I like the way my new SR has turned out so much better than the old one...I feel that the proportions are more closer to the real deal than my old setup was. And to close this post out...a couple of in-car shots: As always...still a lot more to do to this one before I start casting it. Thanks for looking, Jimmy

Re: Marty's Black Missile
Last weekend was a disaster for the SR ...I just couldn't get anything right. So I put it away and let the week pass by. I got a three day weekend, so after recharging my batteries, I started at it again. I re-attacked the head, and valve cover after reworking the front profile of the engine block. Here's how it all turned out:
Just about every detail is there from the CAS boss to the timing chain tensioner to the cutouts on the vlave cover flanges. There is one more detail that I cannot figure out is the valve that's behind the timing chain tensioner...it looks like it has something to do with the cooling system, but I cannot locate it in the FSM...it really driving me crazy that I cannot see what it looks like so I can model it ...and a few more in-car shots I like the proportions a lot better than my old head and valve cover. There are a lot more details to add, but I got a little burnt out from the head and valve cover ...off for the intake and exhaust before finishing the rest of the details up. Thanks for looking! Jimmy
