Gauges stopped working 1997 GS-t Spyder

All my gauges except my fuel gauge stopped working. Even the cigarette lighter-used to peower my external XM unit has no power.

What can cause this and how do I fix it?

Welcome to AF!

Check your fuses under the dash for anything blown. The cig lighter is on its own and shouldn't affest the dash lights. Those are on another circuit. But a short could have caused both to pop. Check those and replace if needed.

The alternator? Wow... how did he figure that one out? Just wow.
Well, glad it was something easy!

Re: Gauges stopped working 1997 GS-t Spyder

The question is, what caused the fuse to pop?

Good follow up question. If the fuse pops, something caused it to. What? And why? On older cars they had fuseable links which were basically just smaller gauge wire. I blew one on my Monte last week, for no reason at all. Turned out wire was just old and almost rotting away.

However, new fuses really don't do that ever. Has the car been worked on before this happened? New radio? Does the battery drain at all?

FUSE BLEW again. Its a 1o amp fuse on the under dash fuse box labeled INST.

It happened the fist time when I punched the accelerator to the floor to avoid a collision. It happened again yestesday when a friend took is out for a fun ride--How can you not "try to see what is the acceleration" on a car like this?

What's causing the instrument fuse to pop when the accelerator is punched?

It was the Alternator! I have no idea how a bad alternator caused one fuse to continually pop, but it did.

Re: Gauges stopped working 1997 GS-t Spyder

That doesn't make sense. Only way I could see that happening is if the alternator was putting out more power than it's supposed to, and that never happens. Too little power won't cause it to pop.

When my alternator went to shit on my DSM, it was charging at 16v. I thought my battery was going to pop.

Very weird. I guess it happens more often than I thought.
