chevelle won't start

I started my chevelle and it ran ok, maybe a little rough, like cold weather. Warming it up applied gentle throttle, stalled out. Started a few times, stalled, then would not start. Can someone give me a list of what to check? How can I test fuel pump, old gas?

I believe engine started on fuel in carborater bowl. I run the engine weekly.

I don't believe fuel pump is bad.

Details, 1972, v-8 307 with carborater.

Possibly bad ignition? air?

Test for spark by holding an ignition wire within ¼" of a ground and have an assistant briefly crank the engine. If there is no spark the ignition system will have to be diagnosed before proceeding.

Test for fuel in the carburetor by removing the air cleaner, holding open the choke, and operating the throttle linkage while observing the primary bores. Streams of fuel should be pumped toward the venturis by the accelerator pump. If no fuel is pumped, the carburetor bowl may be empty.

Check the fuel filter. Since you didn't mention the type of carburetor installed, the filter location can vary. On a stock 2GC or 2GV, the filter is in the carb body where the inlet fuel line connects. Use a backup wrench to hold the large filter nut while loosening the fuel line nut. Remove the fuel line then the filter nut to expose the filter.

It is also possible that the sock filter in the fuel tank is contaminated and starving the fuel pump. An easy way to check this is to remove the inlet line from the fuel pump to determine if gravity from the tank will cause fuel to flow to the pump.

When you remove the fuel line to the filter have someone crank it over a couple of turns with you holding a "catch can" that has a rag in it over the fuel line. See if the pump is delivering fuel to the carb/filter.

do you still have the OEM ignition system [points] or is this with a pertronics ignition mod ?

If the engine does not start remove #1 plug wire see if it sparks good blue color. if so pour a 1 OZ shot glass of gas into the carb bore see if it tries to start. if so then its is a fuel problem.

with points I have had the condenser wire fall off the lug . I have also had the float hang up causing the carb to not allow gas into it.
I once had a 1973 350 CU impala for 10 yrs 110K miles. never missed those points .
