Re: Cool BMW magazine ad...
HONDA might have something to say about that:
(from a web site) "1994 brought safety advances and an LX version of the Civic sedan. A passenger-side airbag became standard on all Civics, and antilock brakes were now optional on the EX coupe, Si hatchback and LX sedan. The new LX sedan filled the gap between the basic DX sedan and loaded-to-the-gills EX. Power windows, locks and mirrors; cruise control; a tachometer; a stereo with cassette player; and 14-inch (versus the DX's 13-inch) tires were all standard on the LX. On the del Sol front, a new model debuted called the VTEC. Named after its 1.6-liter DOHC engine that boasted a sizzling 160 horsepower, this del Sol came with bigger brakes, a firmer suspension and high-performance (195/60VR14) rubber. Apart from the addition of a passenger airbag, the rest of the del Sol line continued as before." So, which came first: the egg or the chicken ? |

Re: Cool BMW magazine ad...
Having said that, I remember that Murray tested most competitors including the F40 during the design process of the F1 and the Ferrari made him realize that a large displacement was better to turbocharge.
Then the ratio power to weight had to be better than anything else and the weight target was set at 1000kgs (missed by 1.8%...) hence the final output of the engine...but who was first to breach the 100 barrier ? |

Re: Cool BMW magazine ad...
After a quick search, it appears that the desmodromic injection of the 3.0l in the Mercedes 300slr ouput was 310hp...

Nice find Peloton.
For those of you who are having trouble reading the bottom of the ad, I re-typed it verbatim: “On the left, the McLaren F1 road car 6.1 litre normally aspirated V12 engine. 0-60mph in 3.2 seconds. 103bhp per litre. On the right, the new BMW M3 Evolution 3.2 litre normally aspirated straight six engine. 0-60mph in 5.3 seconds. 100.3bhp per litre. It is no coincidence that these two extraordinary engines both offer the elusive 100bhp per litre, for they both also carry the name BMW M power. Since its inception in 1972, the BMW motorsport division has rewritten many engineering rules. Not to mention record books. And in so doing has helped create some of the world's most revered cars (in the 1995 Le Mans 24 hour race, the F1 won and took 4 of the top 5 places). Small wonder then that the M3 Evolution has the critics swooning. Autocar magazine summed up the feelings of its press colleagues when it used the phrase "...a mind-blowing supercar...." Very kind, but we can't help thinking we've heard that before somewhere. THE ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE. (BMW)” |

Re: Re: Re: Cool BMW magazine ad...
yeah true, but it's not an NA engine, and there also a saab made for the pikes peak that had 800 bhp from a 2 litre turbo, and it did 0-60 in 2.5 secs
does it count? NO, you can turbocharge an engine to astrospheric power as long as you can cool it enough, NA is far more difficult |

There's also the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale that has a NA 3.6 liter V8 that produces 425bhp. Thats equivalent to just over 118bhp per liter. It's truely an amazing car.
A quote about the Challenge Stradale: "Fine tuning is how the engineers at Ferrari extract more power from the 3.6 liter V8. More horsepower is realized through a high-compression combustion chambers, polished ports, and a larger intake tract." |

yeah. ten years of technology later!
a honda s2000 has got 240 bhp from 2 litres NA. a suzuki gsx-r 1000 engine has got over 165 bhp/litre, well driven engines peak at over 170.. |

Re: Cool BMW magazine ad...
So, the raison why the Mercedes 300 slr top the 100 barrier in the early fifties was not because it was either tubocharged or even with compressor but because it did not run on standart gasoline (very usual at the time).
Have a look at: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame...car.mv&num=363 |
