spark plug replacement
Can someone post brief instructions on how to get to the back plugs on a 97 sable? I figured i'd ask before i went out and bought the hanes manual... thanks a lot.

I have a 96 Sable and did my spark plugs with out a problem. You should try a 78 Chevy Van. Some times those things are a quarter turn at a time.

I just changed mine and the hardest part was getting the plug wire off the plug. '96 with the Vulcan 3.0.
After I was done I looked in the user's manual, go figure, and it states that the rear bank plugs are different than the front bank. Anyone have any thoughts or comments? Why would the banks use different plugs? |

This question was never answered. I stumbled upon this and have
the very same question. The haynes manual is no help for the duratec engine (that is my model). Can anybody give help for the duratec engine? |

I have a 97 w/ the Duratec and have changed the plugs recently for the first time. I removed the intake manifold (and all the stuff attached to it) to get the back 3 plugs. It's not that hard, I took my time, and about 1.5 hrs later I was done. The hardest part was disconnecting the vacuum hoses under the manifold. The next time will be much easier and quicker now that I know what to do.

My son has a 97 Taurus with the 3.0 Duratec. I took it to the shop because engine was missing. I figured it probably needed plugs and new wires. It has 119,000 miles. For $90.00 the shop confirmed my thoughts with their diagnostic machine, proudly announcing it was specifically the plug wire on the #5 cylinder. What shocked me was they wanted approximately $250.00 more to replace the plugs and wires which would bring the total bill to about $340.00 plus tax. I just pd. the $90.00 and brought it home. That's a heck of a price for a tune up. I am definitely in the wrong line of work. He just spent about $500.00 last month having the fuel pump and filter replaced. As suggested in another thread, it appears taking off the manifold would be the best way. The boots look funny on it though. Do they pull straight up and come off like older versions of plugs? For $250.00 I would like to give it a try. I just hope I don't regret it.

Yes, the plug boots pull straight up, they're just really long because the plugs are down deep in the holes.

I replaced them on a 1993 Sable and it took me 4 hours. The back 3 I was able to get to by feel only, cant see them. I think i had to take the air intake off. I will never buy another front wheel drive vehicle.
