VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
So during the weekend, my friend who owns a 1999 VR4 with basic mods + 16T turbos and 550 injectors blew his radiator and left his car til today. He also owns a G8 GT that has a axleback exhaust which he drove down today since the VR4 was undriveable. So we picked up a new radiator and installed it and he drove the G8 and I drove the VR4 back to his house in Moreno Valley from San Gabriel Valley (for those familiar with socal..). So while driving, a black debadged 335i whos chilling in the carpool lane keeps on speeding up and trying to roll along side with me. Finally get some open lane, do a quick 3 way from about 65 until I saw the CHP in front of me.
It seemed pretty close to me but my friend in the G8 told me that I was about 2 cars on him and walking away while the G8 was closing the distance on the 335i with the quickness. Ended with the 335i in the rear, G8 in second and the VR4 in first. It was nice to be able to put the 'ultimate driving machine' in its place as it had been harassing me from over 10 miles. It was kind of funny that a new SI that was behind the 335i in the carpool lane gave the VR4 an applause after we had slowed back down to normal speeds. Sorry the story wasn't more entertaining but its late and I got work in the morning.. |

Ha... go G8.
Unfortunate that Pontiac limits it to 139mph in stock trim... It's got the power to pull past it. Probably peter out just shy of 160mph if you had the room. Good stuff.

Nice double-kill. Interesting setup your friend has. Except for online, I haven't had the chance to meet anybody with a 16T turbo setup as I don't think they are all that common. With the 16T's, how much boost was he running and how good of a tune was it on? One more thing...are the 16T's about the size of 15G's or just a little bigger?

Judging by the name... I'd say they're +1.
lol

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
The G8s are pretty badass for a stock 4 door car. My friend has me considering about buying one. He wants to get the twin turbo kit for the car but he bought the extended warrenty so he said he might trade it in and get the GXP instead.
The 16T turbos 'supposedly' spool a little faster than the 15G and make a little more power. All I know is that a 15G flows roughly 7 CFM less than a 16T so it shouldn't make that big of a difference on a stock motor. We tuned the 99 to run pig rich (10.5) under WOT and i believe that boost spiked up to 18 and held 15psi to redline. I was honestly paying more attention to the road and position of the contenders more than the car's gauges. |

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
Well see now you're comparing the numbers the wrong way imo. You gotta remember that the 9b, 13G/C, 15G, 16T, 19T, etc are all TD04 turbos. They are the same size but the wheels are different. Now people will port out the turbos to increase flow but the physical size of the turbo does not change. The 16G is a TD05 turbo which is a bigger turbo class. Now theres 18G/20G/etc in the TD05 range but also in the TD06 range which are also going to be bigger than TD05.

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
Well, yeah, I don't compare as far as performance goes to TD04's (bolt-on turbos) to TD05's or TD06's. I was just pointing out the fact that the main numbers don't absolutely mean it is a bigger turbo such as the 14B compared to the 15G for instance.

Why can't you bastards just use Garretts to make my life easier. Or we could live in Need For Speed world where everything is Stage 1/2/3 or Street/Performance/Race.

Everything on my car is Performance tuned.
Maybe after I beat the Drift King I can upgrade to race tune.

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
There are some people with 3S's that do so. It is just much easier to get two turbos that bolt on and go as opposed to getting all new manifolds, etc. Hell, even with bolt on turbos and no spray you can get into high 10's now as others have done so. When someone really wants to go all out on a 3S they usually just get TD05 turbos which get really expensive and are quite a bit more work to install. There are a couple people around here that have them though and they are wicked fast. I believe one of them is using twin EVO VIII 16G turbos and the other is using DR-800 turbos which = no traction on an AWD car!

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
Nice race! There is a guy who lives in a town about 2 hours away with a 15g vr4 who put down 368whp on 15psi on pump gas. He is coming to town soon so my friend can tune him on E85 and i am going to demand a ride in that beast!

Re: VR4 vs G8 GT vs 335i
Td05 isn't really going all out. After a couple turbo swaps, you'll see that its just bigger and not that different. Going single would actually make life a lot easier but it requires money or fabrication skills. Unfortunately those are 2 things most people don't have. I sold my friend those turbos rebuilt for a hell of a deal as my car is still currently having issues. After I solve them, I plan to go td05. My other friend has 16g td05 with adapter plates and it feels pretty beasty..
