Question transmission not shifting

I have a 1999, 300m with about 44,000 miles and the transmission will not shift into Drive after the car has
sat for a while (usually over Night) and the temp is
below about 45 deg. When I back out of the garage it goes into Reverse OK, I pop it out of reverse and coast to a stop. once I stop and Put it into drive it just sits there. I pull it into auto Stick and it indicates it’s in 2nd. I shift it up and down and it stills shows it in 2nd. I’ll rev the engine a little and then it kick into gear and goes.

I have notice that if I back out and keep it in Reverse
and come to a stop and shift to Drive the problem does not
occur? Is this a problem or shouldn’t I pop it out of gear
and coast to a stop?

Could this problem be associated with the transmission
Speed sensors or an internal pump problem?? Any input?

Re: transmission not shifting

Never Change Gears While Still In Motion You Are Asking For Trouble When You Do This In Any Vehicle.

Bad low reverse seal it sounds like, leaky seals always are at their worst before they reach normal operating temperature.

Re: transmission not shifting

check the level of your fluid and see what level it is and what color is it. When was the last time you had it in for service?

Re: transmission not shifting

I hade the tras fluid changed after I got the car 39,000 miles.. It's very intermitent problem I can not seem
to see any real pattern other than when it's been cold and the car has sat overnight. I was wondering
if I should just replace the speed input or output sensor??

Re: transmission not shifting

replacing the input or output speed sensor wouldn't correct that. I rebuild transmissions all the time for Chrysler and I DON'T normally recommend this but, you can buy a sealant that can recondition new seals called Lucas Transmission Seal Renewer. Helps to condition those new seals. Don't use a lot because these transmissions are very sensitive as to the kind of fluid that's flowing through them.

The trany doesn't leak any fluid.... and since I've stopped shifting the car out of gear while I cost back the problem seems to not happen lately!! Well keep you posted on what happens next??

That was only 5000 miles ago, my thought is. Did the shop that performed the fluid change use the correct type of fluid when refilling the transmission? If they used anything other than ATF+3 or ATF+4 fluid (Not sure when the +4 fluid was required) in it then that could be your whole problem. Any other type that isn't approved for use in Chryslers after the late 80's including Dexron can turn out to be a very expensive no-no. If they did put Dexron in it I would get it flushed out of there and the right fluid in ASAP.
