swirl flaps on DOHC

Does anyone know if the 2001 Taurus SE DOHC V6 has swirl flaps in the intake maifold. I was watching some You tube videos of people removing these flaps cause as they start to fail they make a loud ticking noise. My car has that noise and I'm wondering if is those flaps. I actually had that intake manifold out at one time but can't for the life of me remember if I saw flaps. Really should get in the habit of taking pictures when I do this kind of work.

Thanks

Re: swirl flaps on DOHC

I took a look at the service manual and it makes no mention of the Intake Manifold Runner Control (IMRC) for a 2001 Taurus with DOHC V6.

Thanks. I didn't think so but old age getting to me. All the examples they showed on You tube seem to be of the Ford Mondeo sold in Europe and they looked like 4 cylinders. At any rate I need to find out what the ticking sound it. sounds like lifters. I had a video of the sound but it is too big to upload

Re: swirl flaps on DOHC

Does the ticking sound change with the engine speed or remain constant? If constant, do you hear it with just the key in the run position, or only when the engine is running? If it changes with engine speed, is it always present when running or only after some time? Can you correlate the timing to anything? Can you tell if maybe it's coming from the belt area or somewhere else?

Re: swirl flaps on DOHC

I'll answer all those questions when my son brings the car home from school this weekend and I get a chance to look at it in detail
Thanks

Re: swirl flaps on DOHC

So it looks like a false alarm. my son brought the car home and I listened to the engine which sounded normal, thank god. I could hear a distant kind of rattle though. Took it for a ride and it got very loud with hard acceleration or sudden braking but it sounded very sheet metalish which made me suspicious. Got under the car and sure enough the heat heat shield for the Cat had broken off the front two spot welds and was lying on the cat. A couple of self tapping screws and 20 minutes and all is well. So glad it was that simple

Re: swirl flaps on DOHC

Yep, that is definitely an easier fix than most opportunities you'll have. Congrats!
