96 buick skylark not running

When I turn the ignition on, I can hear the fuel pump start up and then stop. The car does start up for about a second before stopping again. I have taken the cover off to get at the accelerator while under the hood and added gas manually. It will run from that, but it doesnt seem to be getting any gas from the accelerator itself. When trying to start it up again without first turning the ignition off and then back on again, it will turn over, but not start. I replaced the fuel filter thinking that might have been the issue, but now I am at a loss when that didnt fix it.

Is the fuel pump maybe starting to go?

Additionally, it is a 4 cylinder, 81000 miles. I just recently bought it used and it ran just fine getting it home, but ended up sitting around for about 2 weeks before I could do anything.

What is the status of your security light on dash? Does it stay on? Come on, go off? Flashing?

Re: 96 buick skylark not running

I agree.....

But just because the pump comes on, doesn't mean it is pumping.....attach a fuel pressure gage and see if you have good fuel pressure(around 40psi)....

If you have good fuel pressure, and the car starts and runs as long as you add fuel or spray carb cleaner into the intake, then like brcidd states, it could be a SECURITY problem, and the injectors are not firing.....a noid light attached to an injector harness would verify this...

You would need a code reader that reads "B" codes...most can't, they only read "P" codes.....looking for a B2958 or B2960.....the usual fix is a new PassLock sensor......

You can try a relearn procedure:

Battery has to be in good condition, or you will need a jumper box across your battery....set ebrake....this keeps auto lights off....

1. Attempt to start car and release key(don't turn to off)....your SECURITY light will either flash or be on solid....wait 10 minutes....the light should go out.....

2. when it goes out, turn key to off, wait 5 seconds, and then just turn key to "0n", don't try to crank vehicle, and leave key on.....after 10 minutes, the SECURITY light should go out....

3. when it goes out, turn key to off, wait 5 seconds, and then just turn key to "0n", don't try to crank vehicle, and leave key on.....after 10 minutes, the SECURITY light should go out....

4. turn key to off, wait 5 seconds, and then attempt to start car,,,,,,,if it starts, this is only a "temporary" fix......it will happen again....and this procedure may or may not work.....like I said, the usual fix is the PassLock sensor.....

As you can see, you have to leave the key on for a total of 30 minutes....a weak battery will fail this procedure.....that's why a jumper box may be needed...
