Angry 1997 Town Car "Blend Door"

My 1997 Town Car has had the sound from the dash related to the blend door actuator in other posts. Noise would last for 5 - 10 minutes and go away. Today I noticed when driving I was getting a wild fluctuation in heat when set to automatic on the climate control so I decided to run the diagnostic to verify the blend door problem. I got code 024 so I know it is the actuator. My problem since I ran the diagnostic(exited by pushing defrost) the actuator noise is now constant and I have no heat, only cool air is blowing. Is there a reset I can do for the actuator? It's as if it is stuck in test mode.

It's not 'stuck' in test mode, it was just finished off by the test.
The BDA was forced into a full cycle while it's progress was monitored in test mode.

In my opinion, you just finished it off..

I've often wondered if anyone has pulled the BD back to the full heat position manually and somehow made it stay there...

Changed actuator and now have heat again. Took about 3 hours to do. Dealer wanted $770, part only cost $67.

I had a 1995 TC that the blend door actuator went out on and I simply unpluged the power to the actuator and moved the door manually with a screwdriver from right to left depending on if I wanted heat in the winter or A/C in the summer. Not the best fix but I only had to get under the dash twice a year.

I was wondering about that.. when the BDA breaks, the door flops around (in most cases), how did you make it stay in one place?

I just moved it to one side or the other and it stayed. it did not have much resistance when moving it with the screwdriver, but it did stay on whatever side I put it on IE: Heat or Cold. (Shrugs Shoulders)

Re: 1997 Town Car "Blend Door"

I had a No-HEAT in my 2000 S TYPE jAGUAR ,this car has more water hoses than my garden.
It scares the heck out of me,because CATS don't Like water.
This car has a little electric hot water pump to give you HEAT when the Engin is off.
ROOT-CAUSE: I had to take apart & clean Electric water selonoide.

Note: It's good to exercise these switches during the summer months.

YOU guys are GOOD!

Re: 1997 Town Car "Blend Door"

Hi, I just read your solution to the blend door problem and I think it's great. I'm having the same problem and I'm trying to move the door to the closed position but I cant see the door from under the dash board. Any advise on locating the door would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your Idea. TonyVecchio

How do you access the blend door actuator or the blend door without pulling the whole dash? I want to try moving it manually.

Re: 1997 Town Car "Blend Door"

Under drivers dash fuze box Unplug 15a Fuze # 1 turn on key see if clicking goes away Plug Fuze back in if clicking stops run self test If it comes back removed fuze and install a 5/8 shut off valve in the upper heater hose turn it off to have AC on for Heat not great but is a cheap fix. will work on 95 to 97 Lin TC
The System will work without this fuze is power for the Blend door only the blend door is spring loaded to the full heat pos. at least you wont have to hear that click clack cluck.
