You Go, but the car stays because they so badly built, thus the name Yugo! (And you thought is was because of the country they were built in. )

I liked the convertible!!
A New Yugo Cabrio...
A "Classic" Car With a Tainted Reputation That Deserves a Good Home
During its short life, the Yugoslavian agency that made the Yugo produced just 500 Cabrios for export to the United States. Today it is a very rare convertible. Rarer still is the red 1990 Cabrio "cabriolet" shown here with gray interior (1990 was the last year the Yugo was imported). It has never been registered nor driven on the road. It has just 78 miles on the odometer. There is no wear anywhere...interior, under the hood, the top, the tires. There are no scratches and no dings.

The Yugo suffered from a well-deserved reputation for poor workmanship. Quality control was virtually unknown in the communist bloc, and the Yugo was a prime manifestation. Many Yugos began falling apart soon after leaving the showroom, and it became the frequent brunt of comedy club humor.

The brand new Yugo convertible pictured here believed to be the last of its kind in this condition. It is presently on display somewhere in rural America. The owner has decided to offer it to someone with a sense of humor and an appreciation of the abberations in automotive history, who recognizes an investment opportunity, and who is able to pay the cash-only price of $20,000.

Because of the automobile's reputation as a lemon, this classic convertible can only increase in value. It should not be registered. Every effort should be made to maintain it in its present condition. It should be displayed as one would display an heirloom in a museum, behind cordons and under spotlights, to be both admired and to provide a chuckle.

Yugo's are the cars that made cheap poorly built American cars look good in the 1980s. When garbage like the K car, Cavalier, and Escort were in full swing the Yugo tried to break into the US market. Yugo is short for Yugoslavia. It was a typical Eastern block state owned production company. They were a notch above a Trabant, the East German plastic car.

The Yugo was 2 to 3 thousand dollars cheaper then almost any car on the market at the time. Yugos retailed for $3,995 and Hyundai was $4,995. The Yugo was the size of a little Geo Metro, but used a combination of 1960s technology and cheap off the shelf parts. The engine was so small a spare tire was kept in the engine bay.

After failing to get a foot hold in the American market Yugo gave up. The Yugo was so cheap on the used car market that many were used for crazy projects. Some where on the web is a site that features pictures of what people have created from their Yugos. I think there was a college that had their students make something useful out of a Yugo.

The Yugo has become the Pacer of the 1980s. I think the Pacer is much uglier then a Yugo, but that is what makes a Pacer cool.
