Corvette is the biggest piece of junk on the road!

Ha Ha

Just Kidding

Corvette C5 is best sports car I ever owned. I just wanted get peoples pulses to rise for a moment. I own 99 Tred FRC with 6 Speed, z-51, Corsa Indys, Halltech intake and 2000 style chrome wheels. The only thing I dont like is that they would not offer the HUD as an option. But thats Okay cause I plan on doing a Z-06 down the road, especialy sence it has a HUD as standard equipment. I am glad they switched the wheels in 2000 that was another annoyance, the 97-99 wheels are kinda ugly.

I wasn't aware that they didn't offer the HUD in 99' in the hardtop vette'. My 00' hardtop has it as an option. You learn something new everyday!

I guess I should have waited for the 2000

In the 99 sale brochere it had a blank spot by the comparisons under the HUD. I asked the dealer about it and he said that their attempt with the hardtop was to offer a more frilless entry level performer. There are a few more things that I couldent get for mine vs the other models in 99. I dont recall what they all are.

It would be most distressing if I could get it in 99 and didnt. But if memory serves right HUD is only like $150 option. But at the time I wanted to conserve a little of money so I baught hardtop verses a coupe because I was fixing up my Jaguar. I got a damn good deal on one of the last 99 models. I would like to have a HUD because I fly jets and it would be like flying a fighter on the ground. Allthough even without it it is still a good car, especially with Corsa exhaust and a Halltech intake. In a few years when I save some more money I plan on selling the HT and getting a Z06.

I'd be willing to bet that you could easily add the HUD. You can look into the books and determine what all this system contains. I do know that the HUD requires a low glare type windshield which is different from the non HUD models. You might even pull one from a wreck. The option price in 00' was $375.00, by the way. Something to think about..........

I thought about doing that. I asked a avionics specialist in my unit who fixes things like HUD's how much trouble would be to do something like that. He said it wouldent be that much trouble as long as the as there are readily available slots to install the harnes. I would Imagine for production purposes they use the same system components and have a slot for it. But I would need to get a hold of a wiring schematic for both cars and verify how everything is tied in. Although I dont know if I want to go cutting up my dash for something that may not work. The more I think about it is just one of those things that will be a slight annoyance not haveing but I can ultimately live with out. Down the road I want to get a more option filled vette like a faastback coupe or maybe a Z06. The next vette I get will defenitly have HUD. Sence the car came with Z-51 and 6Speed I didnt get many options for it. In fact the only things I think I got was the in dash CD player and Fog Lights. The next car I get will have it all! Memory Seats, digital climate controled a/c, automatic headlight sensor, and of course HUD.

All being said I can accept that mine doesnt have HUD its one of those not necessary but cool gadgets. I am just glad I didnt get 2001 Z06 knowing that this year HP is being upped and HUD is going to be standard, where as last year it wasnt even an option just like my 99.

Thats how it always is though the next years model of anything will always have more and be a little better. Thats how they entise someone like me to sell what I have to go buy new one :sun:

So you couldn't (or can't) get HUD in the 01' Z06, either? I don't see why not. My 00' hardtop has it. That is weird. I have never driven mine without the display on. I don't think that i could. Of coerse i've put a whopping 2300 miles on mine in the 16 months of owning it. HUD was a major option for me. I had to have a car with it. I only got: HUD, Bose with cd(oh yeah), electronic dual zone air, floormats, lamp group, and six way power drivers seat.
I do believe the HUD addition will be a simple bolt in. The harness will probably have the ports there. I can't see a manufacturer putting different types of harnesses for different options. That would be too costly. Does your dash in front of the cluster, out close to the windshield have a panel that looks like it might come off? That would be my only concern. The dash issue. I know you don't have to have it, but it sure is nice!

That is weird but thats how they did it. I have taken mine to a local track and talked to a few people that had Z06's and we all had one thing common in terms of dislikes and that was the fact that they did not offer HUD for our models. I am looking at both the 99 and 2000 brochoures and sure enough they do have it as an option for 2000 for all where as in 99 it is only marked as an option for the coupe and roadster. As for the Z-06 if you go to the corvette sight you will see that it is not listed for the Z06. And they even mentioned that fact in car and driver where they do a review on new 02 Z06. The funny thing is that it HUD will be standard on 02 Z06's you would have thought they would have done that all along.

As for my dash it is solid no plastic cap where a hud would go. So, I would have to do 1 of two things one replace the entire dash, or take the chance and cut the dash

The idea of yours abou the junk yard sounds good because maybe I might be able to find a wreck with the hud and dash in tact. Because that ultimately would be the way to go. I would probably get the whole entire dash as well as the HUD if were to do it.

I do have a couple more options than I relised. I have the body molding things on doors, and I do have Bose and floor mats. I have a couple after market things. Corsa Exhaust and a cold air intake from Halltech. I live in an area that doesnt require emmisions tests so I have removed my cats, although I can bolt them back on at the base auto shop in as little as 20 miutes if I had to. If you ditch the cats and do cold air intake, the car feels like it has a turbo now

The corsa exhaust is the best after market exhaust I have heard. It makes the car sound more exotic. It doesnt have that Glug Glug big truck engine sound that you get from alot of other exhausts. But it has a quiet sound in 6th gear at 75, but rips hard at 3000+ rpm.

Another thing I did was to ditch te 97-99 Ugly wheels for Chrome versions of the 2000+ style wheel, makes a huge difference in the overall appearance.

Sounds as though you have a nice car! I too live in an area without emissions, but I am very relunctant to molest my vette'. To be honest , my car has been for sale now for a few months. I hate to do it, but i'm about to trade the beauty for a new HD2500 Chevy P/U. I really need the truck to pull a race car. But not to worry. I will have another C5. It will probably be a silver coupe, and I will build the @#*! out of it. But this time I will buy a used one, so as not to have to be the unfortunate one of putting the first scratch on it! Anyhoo, good luck in your searchings for the HUD assembly!

I have to get rid some cars soon as well. Although it will be annoying because the two defenitly dont want to get rid off are the Vette and E-type. I will never sell the E-type. The Mk 10 is the first Jag sedan I have restored, and it gets alot of head turns because peolpe think its a bently or rolls. My 280 is a fun sport beater that I had right after high school I like to go ripping it arround the mountain roads, and do things I would not dare do to the first two cars. I have suped it up over the years and it holds its own, and can run with alot of the earlyier vettes and cammaros.

My Saturn is soon to go, although I will be bying something like it because I require an econo car because I drive 80(both ways) miles a day from where I live. It has been a faithful car I have 180k on it without any major problems until today. The shifter cable snaped and the car is permently in 3rd gear. Luckiley it happend just a block away from my house. It will be an easy fix but I imagine the reliability is going get worse as it approaches 200k. I am thinking of getting a Subaru WRX as a replacement. It will have the practicalty of my saturn as well as have some feel of a sports car. Although I have been impressed with Saturns, they have strong engines. If Corvette engineers were tasked to design an econo car this probabily would be it. I notice alot of subtle simulaitys in the mechanics of Saturn vs the Vette. So I might just get another Saturn. It will be one of those flip flop decisions. What do you think of that new Subaru WRX?

HUD was an option on the '99 Hardtop. I had one, and sold it for the ZO6. That was the only thing I missed on the Z.

HUD = Heads Up Display. Shines various bits of information as a reflection on your windshield just below your line of sight. Works very well, unless the sun is in just the wrong position.
