'66 VW Beetle (air cooled GB)
I was thinking of building a 'bug' when the GB was announced...
I'd already been looking for a kit on E-bay for a while, when i realized that i didn't want another revell beetle. So, off to my local Hobby Lobby with one of their online 40% off coupons. There i managed to score their last Tamiya Beetle kit for the low low price of only $18 (after disc). On to the build. I'm not sure where this is going just yet. Something interesting, but not so complicated that it never gets finished. Kit parts along with some Revell NB and Boxster bits. Some wheel choices. (l-r) revell new beetle, italeri 944, revell (i think) centerlines. And the winner is... I'm gonna try to get super low without just hacking the suspension up. We'll see...

IMO I would go for the Porsche 'telephone' rims or the centerlines, depends of what style you want to achieve, German Look or Oldspeed

Re: '66 VW Beetle (air cooled GB)
From pix i've seen the kit suspension seems a little high right out of the box.
here's a shot of the left rear swing arm. Hope this makes a little sense. It still needs to be trimmed to length and the brake/wheel and shock mounting needs to be added. So, what color shocks are the cool kids running on their bugs these days?

Those 944 telephone dials get my vote, too.
Interesting idea on how to drop the rear. Should do the trick, but it's probably going to be very much lower now. Do lots of test fitting with the engine. It looks like the drive shafts provide alot of structural strength for the rear suspension. If you remove the alignment lug, you should be able to mount it upside down in the transmission (bowing the driveshafts upwards instead of down), and this may retain alot of the original strength if done correctly. But again, test fit- you may be in real danger of scraping the oil pan.
