1996 corsica 2.2L

I own a 1996 corsica and lately it has just been dieing on me. I will be driving and the engine just dies(doesnt chug or sputter) and the speedometer goes dead and the service engine light, battery light, and oil light comes on. All the lights come on that come on when u put the key in the first setting forward(right before u actually start up the car). I have had it to a mechanic twice and he cant find the problem. He hooked it up to the comp. and it didnt find anything. We thought it was the fuel pump at first but that wouldnt explain the speedometer dieing. Any help would be appreciated.

Question

Someone more familiar with this model may be able to give you better help, but sounds like an ignition problem. When you say it was checked by a mechanic was it actually tested on a larger computer type diagnostic machine, or did they simply plug a small tester into the computer plug on your car looking for codes??? If you have a failing ignition module, that type of thing does not show up, only trouble codes stored by your car's computer. I have an older Corsica and many were prone to ignition (module) failure as well as ECM (computer) failure. Unsure about your speedometer, but since most are digital I would assume that perhaps it is disabled when engine shuts down. Could still be a failing pump, but only a pressure test will confirm that.

Be sure and check battery terminals are clean. Had same problem with 1999 plymouth voyager. Gauges failed and then died.Cleaned them and this seamed to solve problem.
