2001 Dodge Ram 4x4 1500 Quad Cab
turn the key, engine won't turn over, straight hook up starter with battery cables, starter spins engine won't turn, all lights come on on instrument panel, checked all fuses, relay, etc..solenoid won't kick gear into flywheel, need some good sound advise. Can't find any threads with similar problem, thank you Dodge fans

Sounds like the starter contacts inside the starter solenoid are burned up so time to replace the starter.

we had a mechanic look at it and advised that hooking battery cables backward does haywire and insane results to the sensors even though instrument cluster lights up and everything, I mentioned about the starter and he said it would do that, so we are giving up on it, at least for the time being, thanks to all anyway, (the red bat cable was hooked up to ground and the black ground cable to the positive post) that's when everything happened.
