Flushing abs system
You have to flush the ABS system EVERY 2 YEARS to make it work properly.
NEVER use DOT 5 or any synthetics! Use premium DOT 3 or 4 fluid. Engine off. Take air cleaner snout and a rubber air hose out for easier access to the unit. Depress brake pedal 30 times,slowly. Open the reservoire and CAREFULLY pull up the cylindrical filter. Siphone old fluid from the reservoir and fill it up with fresh fluid. Don't have to replace cap,yet. Locate the master cylinder bleeder screw (metric 10 mm) about 3 inch below the reservoir, protruding toward passenger side. Take rubber protector and save it. Take 4 ft clear polyethylene tube and press it over the nipple. Tur the ignition key on and loosen the bleeder with M10 small wrench. Keep it open untill you see clear fluid, no air bubbles, coming out trough the tube. Tighten the bleeder. Pump will run for additional 30 sec and will stop. Ignition off. Press the brake 25-30 times again and re-fill the reservoir, DO NOT OVER-Fill. Remove hose, re-attach everything. Pay attention to 3 black plastic hoses on the throttle body above the air inlet opening. It is easy to dislodge them from the black rubber block when attaching the snout. You are DONE. You just flushed everything in one operation. Now you may bleed the lines at the wheels (usually 2 people operation). However, there is a cool gadget which will make it easily a one man operation. I got it on eBay-a bleeder check valve with a clear hose, (it was listed as a Corvette piece). When bleeding lines you have to follow a sequence, though. First you bleed the longest line -rear passenger wheel. Next- front driver,rear driver, finally front passenger. When you replace pads-ALWAYS open the bleeder valve at the caliper BEFORE you depress the piston. You don't want all the crud to be pumped back toward the pump and master cylinder. |
