Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
Ok, this is just a fun thread I started. Almost everybody who owned a plymouth in the 60's or 70's owned one, so Post your good, or bad comments about the world's most bulletproof motor and cars here.
Tell me, what do you think about Slant Six? Tell me if you read this thread! Slantsixness

I Have Never Driven A Car Or Truck With One, But I Have Heard That They Are Great. I Have Bought 2 Of Them And Have Them In A Storage Shed Needing To Be Put Together. (if Anyone Needs One That Has Gone To A Machine Shop I Have 2)

I have one now that has been with me for years and apparently refuses to die. Mileage is unknown but it was rebuilt by a Chrysler dealer back in the mid-eighties (I have the paperwork on its whole life but don't know the numbers off hand). I added a Holley 350 two-barrel carb to it by fabricating my own adapter plate for the Super Six intake, a 2-1/4" mandrel-bent exhaust which I welded up for it out of pieces from a JC Whitney catalog, and the Mopar electronic ignition (mine is a '65 model and can originally with points).
I actually have been looking for someone local who needs a good running slant six and horse trade it for an old fifties hemi. I hate to get rid of this engine but it is just sitting here and will go bad if it sits up too long. It has this very cool idle issue that I can't get rid of so it makes me wonder what's inside the block. It idles with a rump, rump, rump and sounds real good through the large exhaust and cheapo turbo muffler. I was stopped at a checkpoint one day and the officer made me open the hood to prove to him it was just a six cylinder. He said, "It just doesn't sound like one." I don't know what has been done, if anything, but it runs strong and sounds cool. |

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
Too bad you're not local to me, channel7, I do know where there's a 331 hemi laying that's been to a machine shop and is mostly ther (331 is a small block)
Oh well, the darn things not mine anyway (i did work on it though). OK, Here's the current project: 225 slant six block custom made 24 valve head. 2 turbos MPI fuel injection from 3.3L mitsu (caravan) motor A904 transmission 3.55 ratio 8 3/4 2 1/2" exhaust Air conditioning intact in a '69 Dart GT. When it's finished, I'll drive it every other day, but right now the body and interior (stock) are going pretty slow. Drive train is 90% though (exhaust clearance troubles...) Slantsixness I have 3 other slant sixes (stock supers), all with around 250K on them. I just gave up the V8 mopar scene one day about 19 years ago. And to trailduster79-- I put a slant in a '76 4x4 trailduster with a 4 speed and you won't believe how well it did, at 17 MPG too! (not the most powerfull beast, but more than I hoped for!)

I had a 68 Cuda back in the late 70's. Fastback, red with a white interior. 6 cyl, 3 on the tree. I was going to swap in a 383 mag + torqueflite, 8.75" rearend and have my first drag car. Instead I sold it and bought a 66 SS396/375 hp Chevelle.
Did you know they made an alum block for the slant 6 in the early 60's? Personally I didn't care for the slant 6. The distributor is a pain to get to and the crank doesn't have a full compliment of main bearings. Most 6's have 7 mains but the slant 6 only has 4 if memory is correct. |

My mom bought a '62 Belvedere with a slant 6 in 1965. It had about 60,000 miles on it. She had at least 3 kids learn to drive on it plus my dad used it to carry mail on a rural mail route for a while. We finally drove it to a junk yard about 20 miles from our house and sold it to them in about 1975, I don't know what all was wrong with it,but the engine still ran fine.

Our '72 Valiant ran for 14 years and well over 200K miles (before the odometer broke). The car rotted around the engine. Still got 20 mpg well into the '80s. Its a shame they were put out to pasture, they could have stayed around had they been properly converted to fuel injection.

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
Some reasons Chrysler dropped the Slant Six were the inline engine design made it difficult or impossible to fit into newer and smaller front drive cars and it was getting harder to meet emissions without losing even more power.

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
my best friend used to own a 79 Plymouth Duster w/ the slant 6, that car ran like a top. I had a long time ago, my grandfather's 77 Plymouth Volare w/ the slant 6. Makes me wish I never got rid of that car, it was bulletproof and ran like a top, just like my best friend's Duster.

I still have mine a 64 Dodge Dart Gt , two 66 vals, and a 65 val. i grew up working on them with pops. I bought my 64 for $ 200 bucks my first car and still have it. They all run too. the engines are the most fail proof motors.

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
Chrysler ran some ads promoting its new 1981 K cars and claimed that the new 2.2 4 cyl was designed to be as reliable as the Slant 6.

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
I had a '71 dodge Demon with a slant 6 in it. Motor was out of a Dart and must not have had a ring left in the #6 cyl. Everytime I hit the gas, I couldn't see behind me anymore! Drove it for 5K miles before finally selling the car. Wish I hadn't though-- that was the most reliable car I ever had. Only repair I made was to replace the distributor-- $75.00 incl. labor.

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
I'm glad to see that after I started this thread almost two years ago, it's still going!
And by the way, so is my truck.... getting close to 500,000 miles now... Real close! and with the same untouched SlantSix still pulling it, at 25mpg!

Re: Calling all Slant six owners.....or had been's..
Ahh.. the memories... My first car was a 1976 Dodge Aspen with a 225, I believe, slant 6. Not one of the cool 2 doors, but one of the ugly ass 4 door sedans. I got my license in 1992 and my folks were dead set on me getting this car for $250 because it only had 55,000 original miles on it. For about a year and a half I put this car through pure hell but it never quit on me. There wasn't much left of the body when I was done (you know, headlights duct taped in, fenders flapping in the wind, etc..) and I could only get it up to abou 30mph when I junked it at about 70,000. Anyways, I guess the guy just had to change the distributor cap and it was back in business. I saw it around town for a couple years, and then it dissappeared. I guess it was built to last though!!!
