Replacing Tires

I needed to replace two of the tires on my 2012 AWD Outback. I put two new ones on the front of the vehicle and the best of the four old tires on the back as they still had good tread. All the tires are "all season".

Driving on a snowy section of the TransCanada my back end started to slide out. I took my foot off the accelerator and wildly swung the wheel to correct and ended up skidding the other way. Back and forth till I gained control of the car. I felt like a maniac as I pride myself on being a careful driver.

I was at the Subaru dealer the other day and he said I should have replaced all four ties at the same time.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: Replacing Tires

I don't necessarily agree replacing all 4. But the tests that tire manufactures have done report to put new tires on the rear. You'll get some to disagree but google it.

Re: Replacing Tires

Traction on the rear is important, even in a FWD car. If you don't have good traction in the rear (and aren't sure of how to react when the rear slides) then you will end up in the situation that you found yourself in. Myself, personally, I have run winter treads on front, and all seasons on the back of my FWD's without issue, but I made mistakes as a younger driver that taught me what NOT to do. Is it ideal? No, but I am capable of handling it now.

There are even times when I will purposely get the car a little out of control to see what the limits are and how things are reacting when we are having inclimate weather.

Re: Replacing Tires

First, Subaru AWD's are known to be sensitive to tire diameter differences. I don't think that the owners manuals always address this issue even if there is one for your vehicle, but if they do, follow what it says.

You are taking a risk of damaging the center coupling if you don't replace all 4 tires with the same make and model of tires. Further, rotation is required to avoid wear differences (which result in rolling diameter differences!)

So I think it is foolish to replace tires in pairs on a Subaru.
