cooling fan failure
At 3,000 miles my cooling fan malfunctioned, causing engine to severely overheat before I realized the gauge was in red zone. (Totally unexpected). Since then, I've had to add 1 qt oil at 7,000 mi and another quart at 12,000, all before first scheduled maintenance at 15,000. So, my question: has this shortened the life of my engine long term, and will any engine damage be recognized before my 4-year warranty expires? I plan to keep the car long term. Any info to ease my worries is very much appreciated.

Our 2001 330I used 1-1/2 quarts of oil in the first 12,000 miles of operation. Seems to have stopped consuming it now. The car has just about 20K on it now. Don't worry about it, it's probably just the engine breaking in. The rings are setting up nice by now. I'm sure your oil consumption will stop as well.

Same happened to my Z3 and previous 728i. Cooling system seems to be the weak point of all BMW's.

The orange oil light of my '01 325i started coming on when I shut off the engine after about 2500 miles. I took it to the dealership and he said it was about 1 qt. low. He says every BMW burns oil, even the '02s. He didn't tell me to expect it to go away at any time and to check it every 3000 miles and expect to add a quart. The oil light hasn't come on since. Thanks for reminding me that I need to check the level
