Re: WHat is Grand Prix

http://www.a1gp.com/about/a1.php?flashNavId=0|10

A1 is a newer series that was founded by Sheikh Maktoum of Dubai. Its kind of like the World Cup of Racing. Instead of company against company like most motorsports, A1 is country against country. A1 provides everyone with the same cars (allowing for some aerodynamic and suspension adjustments) to keep the playing field level. This means that driver and team skill are paramount, as opposed to many other motorsports where the company that throws the most money at it wins. I believe that the cars are second only to F1 cars in their speed and cornering abilities. The inagural season consisted of 11 races including Laguna Seca, Estoril, Dubai Autodrome, Brands Hatch, and Shanghai. France took 1st, Switzerland 2nd, Britain 3rd, and New Zealand 4th. It makes a good alternative to F1 in the off season and could become a major international series.

Well known names in A1 are Will Davidson, Will Power, Ryan Briscoe, Mathias Lauda (son of Niki Lauda), Nelson Piquet Jr, Jos Verstappen, and Scott Speed.

Its an interesting series that all racing fans should watch.

Question is... if The Stig raced, would he be his own nation?

I mean, some say he has a digital face... and that the outline of his left nipple is identical to the Nurburgring...

All we know, is he's called The Stig.

he's canadian, the best drivers are canadian but we give them fake identities and fake accents so that we don't embarass everyone else. we only put our worst out on the track because we don't want to lose trading partners and stupid crap like that.

anyways i saw a 5th gear or top gear show about this, it's pretty cool looking and the cars sound great. i hope we get it here in canada but i don't know when the series starts.

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

Yup, its televised. Speed TV I think. The cars are open wheelers like a F1/Champ Car/IRL car.

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

It was televised tape delayed on OLN.

The series lost $212 Million in its first season (which ended in April)

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

The series did loose alot, but that was expected in that it is a new series. The guy running it has tonnes of money to throw into it, and much of the initial costs will not be present next year (same cars). They are trying to attract F1 fans that don't have anything to watch in the offseason. Once the word gets out more it could do better.

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

I loved the first season, as amatuer as some of the racing was, it was always exciting.

Was also great to see Matt Halliday kicking some much better known rivals arses Go NZL

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

I love the idea...basically the cars and the rules, with a few adaptations, could be brought over to just about any country and run as an Olympic event. Finally, auto racing as an Olympic sport. So long as there's a place to run near the host city, or a street course that can be set up, it should work!

Re: WHat is Grand Prix

year old thread.
please do not bring dead threads back.

by the way.
F1 cars have never ran competively at laguna secaand that toyota run was for an event; it was by no means the fastest an F1 car can go around that track.
